PLANNING AND ZONING ADMINISTRATOR
The City of Escanaba, is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Planning &
Zoning Administrator. Desired qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent,
with a four- year degree in land-use planning, public policy, landscape architecture or related
field, coupled with two year's experience working in a municipal planning environment.
An equivalent combination of experience and other credentials may be considered in lieu of
above educational requirements. The ideal candidate should have thorough knowledge
of zoning laws, knowledge of the comprehensive planning process, and ability to
read and interpret blueprints, drawings and written plans. Candidate must be
able to communicate effectively with architects, contractors, developers, property
owners, and the public. Must be proficient with computers and software applications,
including MS Office suite, GIS, and CAD. Residency within 20 radius miles of the
Escanaba City limits is required.

PLANNING AND ZONING ADMINISTRATOR

SUMMARY
The Planning and Zoning Administrator is the liaison to the Planning Commission and Zoning
Board of Appeals. The position assists in the development of short- and long-range plans,
including the Master Plan, and ensures compliance thereto. The Administrator also ensures
compliance with Zoning ordinances and related regulations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general guidance and direction of the City Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Planning and Zoning Administrator may be required to perform any of the duties listed below.
The below examples do not include all the duties which the Administrator may be expected to
perform.
• Provide input into the development of short and long-range plans
• Provide planning and land use advice to citizens, boards and other officials
• Make presentations to Council and boards on matters involving Planning and Zoning
• Recommend amendments to the Zoning Ordinance, Master Plan and related documents
• Review permit applications for compliance with Ordinances, Master Plan and other
regulations
• Evaluate land use proposals to ensure compliance with City, State or Federal laws and
regulations
• Keep accurate records of relating to licenses, permits, maps, drawings, programs and
projects
• Liaison to the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and Historic District
Commission.
• Assist the public in all matters involving the Planning and Zoning function
• Assist staff in interpretation and enforcement of codes and regulations
• Pursue grants and other forms of financial assistance to help fund new and existing
programs
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Administrator should possess a four-year degree in land-use planning, public policy, landscape
architecture or a related field, coupled with two years’ experience working in a municipal
planning environment. An equivalent combination of experience and other credentials may be
considered in lieu of the above educational requirements. Must have valid driver’s license and
high school diploma.

SELECTION GUIDELINES
Selection is based on strength of resume, application and cover letter, education, experience, overall

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The Planning and Zoning Administrator is regularly required to ambulate, reach, walk, hear, sit,
talk, converse with others, grasp, handle, feel, and operate office equipment. The job requires close
vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to focus. The employee is
occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch. The employee regularly
lifts/moves up to 30 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed within a climate-controlled office environment, where the noise level is quiet to
moderate. The Planning and Zoning Administrator works near and around a variety of common
office equipment, including copiers, computers, monitors, fax machines and phones. As a result,
the position is frequently exposed to the sounds, electromagnetic fields, fumes and/or chemicals
commonly associated with such equipment.
