A machinist is a skilled trades person who operates various machine tools like lathes, mills, and grinders to precisely manufacture metal parts by reading blueprints, sketches, or CAD files, setting up equipment, and carefully shaping materials to exact specifications, ensuring quality control through measurements and inspections throughout the process; often utilizing both manual and computer numerical control (CNC) machining techniques.
Key Responsibilities include:
Interpreting technical drawings: Accurately reading and understanding blueprints, sketches, or computer-aided design files to determine part dimentions and tolerances.
Cutting tool selection and adjustment : Choosing appropriate cutting tools based on material type and desired finish, aligning and securing them on the machine.
Workpiece setup: Carefully positioning and securing raw material (metal, plastic, etc.) on the machine according to specifications.
Quality control: Regularly inspecting workpieces during and after machining using precision measuring tools to ensure adherence to tolerances and quality standards.
Machine maintenance: Performing basic maintenance tasks on machines, including lubrication, cleaning, and tool changes.
Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving issues that may arise during machining, such as tool wear, machine malfunctions, or material defects.
Production planning: Following production schedules and maintaining consistent output to meet deadlines.
