POSITION SUMMARY:
The Seasonal Camp Director is responsible for leading a comprehensive summer camp program including updating, adjusting, & implementing the programming, supporting seasonal camp staff and girls. The Seasonal Camp Director will be the first line of response to all things during summer camp, including camper or staff conflicts, responding to crises, supporting program areas as needed, addressing code of conduct issues, & managing the documentation of incidents. Camp Counselors must commit to lead by example and live by the Girl Scout Law.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To incorporate opportunities for teaching courage, confidence, and character during daily interaction with campers and staff.
- Work directly with the Director of Camp and Outdoor Education, Assistant Director of Camp, Camp Administrative Specialist, Facilities Manager, & Camp Rangers to ensure the smooth running of summer camp.
- Be on-call for all emergencies, issues, or concerns afterhours & overnight.
- Develop and cultivate a healthy, supportive, and productive staff culture.
- Assist in teaching outdoor skills and techniques and to foster an appreciation for the natural environment.
- Create an atmosphere of teamwork by stepping in and supporting any department, as needed throughout summer camp.
- Work within established Girl Scout methods of camper government which provides the opportunity for girl planning and decision making.
- Ensure all GSSEM, GSUSA, & State of Michigan safety guidelines and regulations are being met, in all areas of camp.
- Assist in maintenance of equipment records and program area maintenance.
- Facilitate daily camp programming activities as assigned.
- Assist in opening and closing of camp.
- Step in to assist counselors with the support of their campers with a variety of needs such as homesickness, conflict resolution, and behavior management.
- Ensure all camp policies, standards, and procedures are being followed.
- Carry out other non-essential duties as delegated by the Director of Camp and Outdoor Education; including assisting staff in other cabins, assisting in the office, assisting in the kitchen, and assisting with camp programs or events.
- Other duties as assigned.
This role will be required to live on Camp Hawthorn Hollow property (June through August).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree with concentration in a related field or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years' experience as a camp staff member.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Ability to stay at Camp Hawthorn Hollow full-time from June - August.
- CPR and First Aid Certified.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Good judgement in anticipating and preventing accidents.
- Be able to act calmly, quickly, and give and/or follow directions during an emergency.
- Knowledge of safety practices and policies of GSSEM, GSUSA, & State of Michigan.
- Flexible and committed to personal and professional development.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Become a registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA.
- EQUIPMENT USED: Program supplies, specialty activity supplies, cleaning supplies, walkie-talkies.
- PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES/DEMANDS: Ability to walk, stand, and sit for 2-3 hours at a time. Respond quickly to potential emergencies. Ability to lift 20 pounds.
- WORK CONDITIONS: Activities occur both in an indoor and outdoor environment.
