Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Tenure System
Position Summary
The Department of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (CMSE) and the Department of Mathematics (MATH) at Michigan State University (MSU) invite applications for an open rank tenure system position in applied and computational mathematics beginning Fall 2025. The successful candidate will be jointly appointed between CMSE and MATH, with a majority appointment in CMSE. The CMSE and MATH departments are both committed to supporting an open and inclusive culture and as such have a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The jointly appointed open-rank position seeks to build upon the strong bonds between the two departments. While all areas of computational math will be considered, an emphasis will be placed on the following two areas:
- Area 1: Methods for solving Partial Differential Equations in high dimensional spaces, including problems in quantum emulators, uncertainty quantification, transport, financial markets, etc. Here, it is important that research in algorithm development has strong connections to needs in an application state space.
- Area 2: Methods/algorithms for near-term, intermediate-scale, and/or fault-tolerant quantum computing platforms, including algorithms for particular applications (e.g., quantum algorithms for differential equations) and methods to enable scalable quantum computing (e.g., quantum error correction).
While we anticipate the appointment to be at the assistant professor level, an appointment at the level of associate or full professor may also be considered depending on the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Preference will be given to candidates with at least 2 years of research and teaching experience beyond the Ph.D.
Qualified candidates will exhibit strength in research, teaching and integrated DEI activities. Research will be judged on publication rate, quality of journals/publications and the ability to build an independent and innovative research program with strong potential to impact the field and adjacent areas as communicated in the research statement and curriculum vita. Teaching will be evaluated through demonstration of commitment to student mentoring, willingness to experiment with pedagogical approaches, and ability to generate a welcoming environment as communicated in the teaching statement, as well as other evidence contained within the curriculum vita. A successful candidate will demonstrate integration of DEI activities into their research and teaching program. Evidence of external funding is important for senior candidates (any candidate already in a faculty position)and is considered a plus for junior candidates.

- One-page cover letter that frames the application in the context of this ad and addresses the relationship between the candidate's research and the areas of research preference.
- A CV, including a list of publications, a history of external funding, contributed and invited talks, teaching, and mentoring roles, contributions to the academic community, and efforts in public outreach.
- A two-to-six–page research statement highlighting past research accomplishments and future plans that frame the applicant’s ability to conduct independent research in the fields relevant to this position. This statement should include experience or plans to advance DEI within the applied and computational mathematics research community.
- A two-to-three-page teaching statement describing the applicant’s experience in instruction and research mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, including experiences or plans to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for students.
- Four letters of reference. Three of these letters must address the applicant's research while one letter must address the applicant's instructional experience.

BACKGROUND
The CMSE Department, jointly administered by the College of Natural Science and the College of Engineering, is one of the newest departments at MSU. Founded in 2015, CMSE recognizes computation as the “triple junction” of algorithm development and analysis; high performance computing; and applications to scientific and engineering modeling and data science. The CMSE department hosts leading, interdisciplinary faculty groups whose research spans a broad collection of foci, including Computational Fluid/Plasma Dynamics, High Performance Computing, Computational Biology, Inverse Problems and Imaging, Machine Learning, Computational Harmonic Analysis, Statistical Data Analysis, Topological Data Analysis, and Quantum Computing. In conjunction with these research activities, the CMSE department boasts a strong Ph.D. program and a dynamic postdoctoral program. The CMSE Department also offers BS and MS degrees in Data Science as well as minors in Data Science and CMSE.
The MATH Department at MSU represents all areas of mathematics and has leading research groups in both pure and applied mathematics. Active research areas in applied and computational mathematics include Numerical Analysis, Mathematical Physics, Scientific Computing, Applied Partial Differential Equations, Optimization, Inverse Problems and Imaging, and the Mathematics of Data, Computation, and Inference, with cross cutting research at the interfaces of these important areas. In conjunction with these research activities, the Math Department is home to a vibrant postdoctoral program and a vibrant Ph.D. program. The Math department supports BS degrees in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Computational Mathematics, as well as an Advanced Mathematics undergraduate program, with many students continuing to advanced degrees.
