Position: Engineering Manager (Design Group)
Disher Design & Development is a full-service product development and engineering services firm in West Michigan. Our engineering team is highly technical and diversified, serving in a variety of markets including automotive, office furniture, alternative energy, and medical. Our capabilities span from napkin through launch, providing numerous opportunities for us to partner with clients in product and process development, as well as in Talent identification and attraction.
We are currently partnering with a West Michigan based furniture manufacturer in their search for a full-time, direct hire Engineering Manager to lead their design group.
Following are the responsibilities and qualifications for this role:
- Supervises the development of designs for products based on customer or company requests, assuring that they are production-ready and that fixtures and tooling are ready for release for production.
- Follows projects through all steps in product launch process: quote, prototype, tooling/fixtures, pilot, and production.
- Develops and manages Engineering Department into cohesive and effective team.
- Converts verbal description or sketch to product concept and designs and develops product.
- Prepares / creates documentation for internal and external customers, for example, CAD drawings (both 2D and 3D), work instructions, quality plans, etc.
- Prepares Engineering Change Notices. Communicates engineering changes with customers
- Supervises or assists with building / modifying prototypes to print.
- Assures efficient and cost-effective manufacturability of all products designed.
- Assures that common sense is at the heart of all design decisions.
- Problem-solves with manufacturing and manufacturing engineering teams.
- Communicates with German partners, as appropriate.
- Assures all products meet BIFMA standards and pass BIFMA testing.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or in Engineering Technology required.
- Minimum two years product engineering supervision experience.
- Hands-on manufacturing equipment experience is required, such as use of drill press, saws, welding equipment.
- Furniture industry experience preferred.
- Must be an effective coach, leader, and manager.
- Must be creative and able to lead the creative efforts of others.
- Advanced CAD skills, both 2D and 3D.
- Must be self-starter and motivated to bring projects to successful and timely completion, independently.
- Must be team player, willing to pitch in and help other team members when necessary.
- Excellent communication skills: written, verbal, and listening.
- Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment.
- Bi-lingual skills in German and English a plus.
- Intermediate MS Excel and MS Word skills
