Rate of Pay: $28.84/hour (Additional $2.50/hour with specialized licenses or journeyman card)

Job Summary: The Boiler Operator is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing boilers and associated heating, ventilation, and cooling systems across Monroe Public Schools. The role ensures that all systems are functioning safely and efficiently, following state and local codes. The Boiler Operator must be proficient in general maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of low-pressure boilers and related equipment, with a focus on energy management and safety.

Qualifications:

• Education:
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical tasks in English.
• Licensing/Certification:
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (no moving violations in the last 3 years).
  • Valid boiler operator licenses and/or certifications (e.g., City of Detroit, City of Dearborn, or NIUPLE certification or equivalent credentials).
• Experience:
  • Minimum of five years of experience working with Kewanee and Lochinvar low-pressure boilers or similar systems.
  • Knowledge of state and local boiler codes and regulations.
  • Experience with electrical, plumbing, chillers, boiler safety, and steam and hot water boiler operations.
• Technical Skills:
  • Ability to test and treat boiler water chemistry and maintain necessary documentation.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, architect/engineer specifications, and working drawings.
  • Skilled in operating and troubleshooting computerized heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including Direct Digital Control (DDC) and pneumatic systems.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance procedures and mechanical systems, with the ability to make repairs as needed.
• Other Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass a written and oral proficiency test administered by Monroe Public Schools.
  • Ability to work in various conditions, including heights, small, enclosed areas, or confined spaces, without restriction.
  • Strong organizational skills for maintaining records of materials, parts, and supplies, and managing inventory.
  • Commitment to follow all safety regulations and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate, maintain, and repair boilers, chillers, and heating/cooling systems throughout the school district.
• Ensure all systems comply with state and local boiler codes and operate safely.
• Perform water chemistry testing, treatment, and documentation to ensure boiler systems are functioning properly.
• Troubleshoot and repair DDC systems and pneumatic unit heaters.
• Read and interpret blueprints and specifications for system layouts, making necessary adjustments.
• Assist with special projects related to HVAC and boiler systems as assigned.
• Maintain accurate records of material sources, parts, and supplies, ensuring proper inventory levels.
• Work independently or as part of a team to complete various maintenance projects.
• Follow all district policies, safety protocols, and industry regulations regarding boiler and HVAC systems.
• Report major repairs to the Maintenance Supervisor and recommend tools or supplies for purchase.
• Complete and close out work orders, logging time worked, and materials used in the district’s maintenance management system.
• Maintain district-owned vehicles and equipment used for boiler and HVAC operations.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to lift and carry 50-80 lbs. over 100 feet.
• Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and stairs up to 40 feet.
• Capability to work in confined spaces and environments requiring crawling, crouching, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
• Adequate vision and hearing to operate and troubleshoot mechanical systems safely.

Performance Responsibilities:

• Report directly to the Maintenance Supervisor.
• Ensure the safe operation of boilers and HVAC systems in school buildings.
• Perform routine inspections of boiler systems and address any issues promptly.
• Accompany and assist outside contractors as needed.
• Follow all safety regulations and wear appropriate PPE during work.
• Attend relevant training to stay current with boiler and HVAC maintenance best practices.
