Description/Distinguishing Features
This is apprentice level work involving the maintenance and construction of the wastewater-sanitary collection/storm water collection system and performs related work as required. Operates one or more types of automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks; does related work as required.
Examples of Duties
- Assists Vactor-Jet Operators utilizing Combination Vehicle (Vactor) in the cleaning and maintenance of the entire wastewater collection system; including residential root intrusion removal. Will also assist CCTV-Sewer Surveyor;
- Operates trucks in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel and supplies;
- Operates trucks in carrying tools, equipment, parts, and materials/supplies to and from a job site;
- Performs minor repairs on vehicle equipment; repairing streets and roads, sanitary collection sewers, water lines and mains, tar heaters, and cement mixers; operating road compactor and various other pieces of equipment;
- Performing maintenance on streets, sidewalks, traffic signs, structures, sanitary collection and storm sewers, cemetery, water mains, manual labor operations;
- Places barricades and traffic delineators;
- Uses hand held computers, preparing simple work reports;
- Performs snow removal and street sweeping operations;
- Reads maps and makes emergency system shutdowns;
- Performs manual labor relating to hydrants and other water system connections;
- Works with Public Services staff to learn operations such as the water distribution system; operation and maintenance procedures; Public Works operation and maintenance;
- Performs minor equipment repairs; reads water meters on an assigned route and records readings.
Essential Qualifications
Standing, walking, driving, lifting (90 lbs), pushing or pulling, bending, reaching, squatting, reading, writing, hearing, talking, seeing (clear vision near and/or far), and working with others and alone. Work with machinery and a variety of tools; may work in various lighting situations; high and low temperatures; wet and dry conditions; and noise, dust, and odor levels may fluctuate;
- Must be capable of entering and functioning in confined spaces safely;
- Must be capable of working in open excavations and utilizing trenching and shoring techniques;
- Some knowledge of municipality construction and maintenance principles;
- Some knowledge of traffic laws and regulations;
- Ability to make minor equipment repairs;
- Some knowledge of the Public Services Department activities;
- Expected to perform the following as it could be a critical part of the position:
- Must have good oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public;
- Must have the ability and skills necessary to successfully complete the apprenticeship within three years of appointment;
- Completion of a high school diploma or GED.
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and certified driver's license CDL "B" endorsement with air brakes preferred; or the ability to obtain within the first six (6) months of employment.
A written test will be provided for this position.
