Job Title: Plastics Engineer
General Purpose: The plastics engineer will be part of a highly innovative, start-up oriented team to continuously develop and install advanced plastics processing operations. The plastics engineer will work closely with operations to ensure training, productive, and safe plastic process operations. The ideal candidate should have over 5 years of experience in plastics processing with a focus on injection molding, over-molding, insert molding, and plastics extrusion.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assume full ownership of process definition, requirements, and execution in areas of responsibility.
- Develop, configure, and optimize industrial processes from inception to start-up and certification/validation.
- Assess processes, gather and interpret data, reach conclusions, make recommendations/changes to improve existing processes.
- Design, run, test, and conduct experiments to upgrade systems and processes.
- Develop and maintain process-related documentation.
- Ensure processes are reliable and safe and enabled on a variety of manufacturing systems.
- Develop best practices, routines, and innovative solutions to improve production rates, efficiencies, yields, costs, and quality of output.
Skills and Abilities:
- Experience in managing and delivering pilot scale processes developed on new and existing equipment.
- Experience with injection molding equipment.
- Ability to design development tooling for new parts a plus.
- Familiarity with extrusion of olefinic and styrenic plastics a plus.
- High level of analytical ability and critical thinking applied to solve complex problems.
- Hands-on bias with a practical application of knowledge and experience necessary.
- Experimental design and execution along process capability assessment and optimization.
- Engineering and scientific report writing skills.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.
- Critical thinking strengths necessary.
- Basic programming/project management skills required.
- Excellent decision-making and leadership capabilities.
- Thorough knowledge of tooling and manufacturing processes.
- Experience in CAD and CAE tools, Solid Works preferred.
Education, experience-and/or Training:
- Bachelor’s degree with a major in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering or other engineering discipline.
- Technical Associates Degree in the above Engineering disciplines will be considered along with years of experience and work background.
- Experience in plastics molding and extrusion manufacturing and function is considered a plus.
- Training and hands-on capability with a variety of computer applications and tools including statistical software packages and database applications.
- Theoretical and practical project engineering knowledge.
- Knowledge of techniques and tools applied in the field of technology and product.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience as a process engineer in a technology development environment.
- Experience in strategic planning, risk management, and/or change management.
