The Eastern Upper Peninsula Transportation Authority is currently seeking applications for deckhands for the Sugar Island Ferry. Applicants will need to work well with the public and have good written and oral communication skills. Must be able to remain on their feet for several consecutive hours, withstand exposure to the elements and be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Paid training will be provided. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and a criminal background check. Wage is $18.00 per hour. GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a department head, maintenance supervisor or captain typical duties for a deckhand include the following. These duties are not intended to be understood as an exhaustive list of all job duties.
- Directs traffic, loading and unloading ferry vessel in safe and efficient manner
- Adjusts ramps for proper loading and unloading of vehicle traffic
- Closes gates on docks on each trip
- Collects fares
- Ensures vessel is safely secured to docks (Line handling)
- Monitors electrical system including cabin and deck lights (changing bulbs as necessary)
- Keeps passenger cabins clean and tidy including deckhand quarters
- Keeps engine room clean and tidy
- Keeps decks and ramps (onboard and onshore) clean and free from ice and operational
- Courteous to passengers at all times
- Ensures accident reports are properly filled out and turned in
- Checks all compartments on vessel
- Paints and does minor repairs
- Keeps dock areas clean and tidy, including weed control and grass cutting
- Washes decks
- Assists in maintaining log books
- Assists supervision and United States Coast Guard with inspections
