Essential Function of the Job:
Responsible for ensuring that the agency’s vehicles – including buses and personal vehicles are safe, maintained and well-functioning. Works as a part of the Transportation Department team by scheduling vehicle appointments; performs all preventive and emergency maintenance of agency’s vehicles; and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, standards, and laws. By ensuring that our fleet is operational, other employees are able to perform all of their duties for the community in the most efficient way possible.

- Performs all major duties and responsibilities of “A”, “B”, and “C” mechanic classifications, and in addition must be able to perform all repairs needed on any vehicle owned by the agency and possess/maintain all applicable certifications.
- Diagnose safety and mechanical issues and make recommendations for repair and disposal of vehicles.
- Make mechanical repairs and adjustments on brakes, driver train, electrical, and all other systems and components of agency vehicles.
- Gas and Electrical welding.
- Metal and fiberglass body repair.
- Perform all work on diesel and gasoline engines.
- Secure EightCAP, Inc. property, buildings and yards under transportation control.
- Attend continuing education courses and trainings in order to maintain required certifications and others as directed by supervisor.
- Schedule and input data into the fleet computer system.
- Coordinate and manage roadside emergency assistance requests.
- Maintain a proper parts inventory
- Makes recommendations for costs savings measures or initiatives to supervisor.
- Work with other EightCAP employees to efficiently schedule any vehicle repairs and maintenance appointments that are needed.
- Responsible for ensuring that all work conducted on agency vehicles is done in accordance with MIOSHA, OSHA, and other applicable safety standards.
- Prepare agency vehicles for inspections, including but not limited to the Michigan State Police bus inspection; serves as the primary contact for inspectors during inspection process.
- Maintain records on a variety of software systems.
- Drive as substitute bus driver as needed.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements of Work:
- Supply own tools.
- Ability to organize paperwork and manage time.
- Department of Transportation Physical including drug testing.
- Satisfactory review of Criminal History Check and DHS Clearance.
- Demonstrated skills in written and verbal communication.
- Ability to work well with others and give direction.
- Lifting large amounts of weight is often required.
- Maintain current copies of driver qualifications, i.e. CPR cards, license, physical, training, etc.
- Effective, January 31, 2022, all EightCAP staff must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Exemptions may be granted for individuals who request and receive an exemption from vaccination because of a:
- Medical condition, or medical necessity requires a delay in vaccination, as documented by a licensed medical practitioner (as a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act)
- Sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance (established under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964).
Those who are granted an exemption for one of the reasons listed above are required to undergo weekly testing for current SARS COV-2 infection.
Aside from those who are granted exemptions for one of the reasons above, there is no testing option as an alternative to the vaccine requirement.
Required Minimum Training and Experience:
- Valid CDL with Air Brakes and Passenger Endorsement and excellent driving record.
- Completion of Michigan School Bus Driver Education Course.
- Hold State Certification Applicable Diesel or School Bus Mechanic.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledgeable in diesel and gasoline engines and school bus requirements.
- Computer and Organizational skills.
