Founded in 1948 by John Pridgeon and Donald Clay, we are one of the largest independent, value-added manufacturers and suppliers of automotive stamped and fine-blanked components in the United States.
The Hand Welder Tier 2 will use the MIG/TIG welding system to hand weld components in an exemplary manner according to company quality policies.
Qualified candidates will possess the following Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED
- Twelve months of production MIG and TIG (hand) welding experience, including experience with setting up and troubleshooting TIG and MIG welding equipment
- Three months of experience operating machines such as robotic welders
- Completed basic Welding Certification
- A practical test will be administered to measure welding skills. Familiarity with Welding Procedure Specifications is required. Welders are responsible for owning their own approved welding helmet.
- Experience using quality tools such as micrometers, calipers, and gages, including Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) experience. Welders are responsible for owning a set of approved calipers
- Computer literacy required
- Company forklift/hi-lo license or the ability to pass both written and practical tests to obtain one.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Must not have a pace-maker
- An excellent work record, including attendance
Preventative Maintenance (PM) /Standardized Work:
- Set up work station with appropriate weld jig and check fixture according to the check sheet.
- Set the MIG and TIG welding system according to the Welding Procedure Specification.
- Follow set-up instructions when setting up welders and follow general operator instructions when operating machines.
- Operate machines to process parts, including loading and unloading components, consistently maintaining appropriate production levels
- Read, understand, and complete all production paperwork.
- Demonstrate proficient use of production systems (Vulcan, Kanban, Intranet, Production Notes), routers, tags, labels and instructions (first/last piece, MSDS, fixture repair, pre-production, rejects, and sort/scrap).
- Support production to be able to obtain a first good piece per quality standards, approving and signing off on first/last piece after operator has completed the checks (or loading and unloading parts to support production). Accurately record daily production activity in the production notes.
- Verify error proofing.
- Obtain and submit necessary weld cross sections, destruction test, etching samples and complete paperwork. Take appropriate corrective action when weld cross sections and etching samples fail: notify engineers, submit new sample, and investigate failure.
- Support “End of Runs” by working with both Tool Room and Engineers to identify and address any issues during runs, returning all paperwork, gauges, and fixtures to proper locations after changeovers.
- Support production by repair welding defective parts that failed leak test or have a visual weld defect such as holes, undercut, or porosity.
- Assist with troubleshooting welders, fixtures and machines to ensure both the quality and maximum levels of production.
Continuous Improvement/Lean Principles:
- Participate in and support lean initiatives such as continuous improvement events and problem solving events, identifying and eliminating all types of waste. Assist Manager and Engineers with data collection. Document cost savings, consolidate processes, and eliminate unnecessary operations.
- Develop continuous improvements to reduce time and ensure part consistency throughout the business unit.
- Suggest and implement ideas to increase personal and departmental efficiency.
- Anticipate problems and work to eliminate them before they happen.
- Participate in 8D and 5-Why problem solving teams and fixture reviews.
- Use and maintain quality tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gages, drop gages, ring gages, thread gages, torque tests, fixtures, CMM reports, push-out machine, quality alerts, and inspection sheets. Ensure all fixtures are checked and certified per gauges and company quality standards.
- Assist and train operators and welding in determining weld quality using quality tools, visual inspection, boundary samples, and destruct tests.
- Run parts according to company quality standards and in a timely manner. Read and interpret job book, control plans, and prints to ensure quality of parts. Submit parts off equipment for appropriate quality testing.
- Analyze gage and CMM data to adjust weld fixture details, weld settings, and to program settings to produce parts that meet dimensional requirements (from first piece on.)
- Consistently adhere to, and support, company policies and procedures, including ISO, TS 16949 and safety regulations.
- Safely use forklifts/hi-lo and cranes, maintaining licenses, maintenance schedules, and inspection sheets.
- Follow all safety procedures, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), controls, safety devices, and use of coolants.
- Identify potential safety issues and take appropriate action. Ensure environment is free of avoidable risks, and report concerns immediately, taking appropriate action to immediately rectify and resolve.
- Maintain weld equipment and processes to OSHA, MIOSHA, and company standards.
- Own departmental and personal work area organization to achieve departmental 5S score.
