The Certified Nursing Assistant cares for residents under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. The position requires patience, compassion and a desire to care for the residents in a gentle and empathetic manner.
Essential functions and responsibilities include
- taking and recording vital signs
- measuring and recording height and weight
- recording fluid intake and output
- caring for each resident's environment and recognizing abnormal changes in body functioning - as well as recognizing the importance of reporting such changes to a supervisor.
- CNAs are responsible for making routine rounds on each assigned resident
- bathing residents
- assisting with grooming, dressing, toileting, parineal care, oral care, eating, hydrating, and providing post mortem care.
CNAs must be observant of residents' skin when giving care, reporting any changes to a licensed nurse. In providing skin care, CNAs transfer, position and turn residents. For this reason, the physical ability to safely lift at least 50 lbs. is required.
CNAs must modify their own behavior in response to residents' behaviors, and must be aware of developmental changes associated with the aging process. CNAs are responsible for meeting each resident's mental health and social service needs, allowing each resident to make personal choices, providing and reinforcing behavior consistent with the resident's dignity, and using available resources for emotional support.
CNAs are responsible for maintaining or improving the level of independence for each resident in their care through regular range of motion exercises, proper positioning in bed and chair, and the use of assistive mobility devices.
