PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Assistant Materials Manager oversees and monitors all functions of the Materials Department ensuring that the scheduling of material receiving, inventory control, production processing, and finished goods shipping meet customer requirements. Coordinates material flow into and out of the facility on a Just-In-Time (JIT) basis to insure 100% on-time delivery of quality product to the customer while controlling cost.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITIONS:
- Co-ordinates daily activities within the Materials Department.
- Develops and maintains customer and subcontractor partnerships.
- Assists in the development of procedures and methods which improve material and logistics controls/quality/productivity/cost to the materials/logistics operations
- Analyze customer releases and shipment schedules. Monitor and assist, as necessary, production scheduling activities to meet customer delivery schedules, optimize inventory turns and machine and manpower availability.
- Maintain, monitor and communicate machine capacity, customer volumes, manpower requirements, and equipment issues to meet production needs.
- React to exceptional conditions at the customer and supplier level and within the division. Recommend and ensure execution of plan to meet customer delivery schedules
- Ensure non-conforming material is identified and dispositioned accordingly.
- Review customer delivery performance ratings, initiate problem solving activities for negative ratings, review permanent corrective actions and verify effectiveness.
- Participate in negotiations with production material suppliers to ensure optimum pricing and terms as necessary.
- Oversee supplier selection, approval and development activities.
- Develop Supplier Manual; manage revisions, ensure timely distribution, and supplier compliance to guidelines.
- Define MRP system policies (i.e. manufacturing lead times, production standards, efficiencies, costing, etc.) and ensure systems and policy implementation and changes are managed to meet customer and business requirements.
- Define supplier performance standards and measurement criteria. Review supplier ratings and react to unsatisfactory and/or unacceptable ratings.
- Oversee the scheduling, recording and reporting of physical inventories. Monitor inventory levels and assist with scheduling activities that optimize inventory turns. Ensure timely and accurate submission of financial and fiscal inventory reports.
- Monitor Customer Communications (DDL, CMMS, SMART, etc.) and maintain EDI Systems.
- Ensure all ASN’s (Advanced Ship Notices) are completed by trained personnel per customer requirement.
- Ensure engineering and model year changes are properly coordinated to avoid surplus and/or obsolete inventory and to meet customer change dates.
- Review, make claims and recommend disposition of obsolete material.
- Participates in the development of the Company Goals and Objectives to support the annual Business Plan.
- Develops department action plan and leads their team to achieve strategic goals and continuous improvement objectives in alignment with the Company’s Vision and Guiding Principles.
- Prepares and supports the budget planning process and takes responsibility to meet the financial targets.
- Promotes/recommends continuous improvement suggestions including environment, people, processes and equipment/machinery.
- Assists in the development of procedures and methods which improve quality/productivity/cost to their area of responsibility.
- Makes decisions in the scope of their responsibilities that are in the best interest of the department, Division and Cosma/Magna.
- The Department Leader reports directly to the General Manager/Assistant General Manager and is responsible to provide communication and reporting of their Department progress/results in achieving divisional goals; and the regular operation of the department.
- Ensures confidentiality in all matters pertaining to both business and employee relations.
- Provide guidance and support to the Department Leadership Team.
- Conducts monthly department meetings to communicate Safety, People, Quality, and Production information and to promote involvement in issues affecting employees or their work areas.
- Participates in manpower requirements planning, overtime scheduling, and assists with capacity planning to meet future objectives.
- Directs and distributes the work for their area of responsibility.
- Completes Payroll activities for employees.
- Ensures fairness to direct reports, and encourages and participates in the Open Door Resolution Process for employee relation issues
- Performance Management - Observe, understand, teach, coach and mentor direct reports for enhancement of knowledge, skills and succession planning.
- Effectively builds and fosters high performing teams by ensuring teamwork within the department.
- Conducts and/or ensures that all Supervisors/Lead hands Investigate all non-conformance to Company polices/procedures/rules/regulations and apply the applicable corrective action. i.e. coaching, counselling and feedback documentation, discipline, performance management, etc.
- Conducts performance reviews informally or formally as required and ensures performance reviews are completed for all employees.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

- Must possess time management, leadership, communication, organizational, and presentation skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Some of the physical demands of this position include sitting for prolonged periods of time, walking up and down staircases, occasional lifting, and occasional stooping and bending.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of production scheduling.
- Knowledge of MRP and Operations/Inventory Management practices
- Must possess knowledge and proven skills in one of the following: Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Kaizen; Project management and prioritizing.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of general office procedures including PC and LAN computer use. Must be proficient in relevant computer software and program use
EDUCATION:
- Completion of post-secondary education in a related field e.g. Materials and/or Logistics Management and/or equivalent work related experience
WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Skill gained by experience: minimum 5 years material control/logistics experience in an automotive manufacturing environment.
- Five years related work experience in a Just in Time automotive environment.
- Minimum 5 years in a leadership role.
