Herbruck’s is a family owned business whose origins date back to the 1920’s when Harry Herbruck. Sr. started an egg and butter delivery business in the St. John area. His son, Harry, Jr. and his wife Marilyn moved the business to Saranac, Michigan and began raising pullets in 1958. Currently, the business is owned and operated by the 3rd generation of the Herbruck family and many of the 4th generation are actively working in the organization.
Today, there are operations in Michigan, Indiana and Pennsylvania employing approximately 750 workers. The operation houses over nine million hens in six main farm locations all located in Ionia County and three processing facilities. Feed Mill, Warehousing, Fertilizer, and Distribution operations are integral to the operations in all three states.
Summary:
As a Processing Operator, you will be working in a temperature controlled, USDA facility which looks much like a manufacturing operation. On average, over two million eggs are packaged at one of three facilities each day. In total approximately six million eggs are packaged or liquified daily. Processing operators will be involved in different functions while ensuring the quality food standards are met for consumer consumption. You will likely rotate amongst washroom, where eggs are cleaned of any debris or dirt; grading, where you are visually inspecting eggs being packed; operating machines, including robots, which will stamp and or auto pack cartons or you will be loading/unloading and handling cartons of eggs. In one of our facilities they will process both shell and liquid eggs, in addition to the above listed activities, you may work on the liquid side, where you will candle (visual internal egg inspection) or pluck any shell or unacceptable egg debris from cups. All operators will be trained and are to understand and follow Food Safety standards (HAACP) and Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP). Some of these Standards state a hairnet (when applicable a beard net) must be worn at all times, no rings or other jewelry are allowed, no make-up or nail polish and clothes must be clean and free from any holes or exposed skin.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a desire to work in an environment which closely resembles a manufacturing facility. The floors will at times be wet and slippery so caution while walking is necessary. Any employee is not to have direct contact or live with any birds or pigs to ensure proper biosecurity for the Herbruck’s flocks. The candidate must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have the flexibility to work, shifts that sometimes an exceed 10 hours per day and will include weekend and holiday shifts. The physical demands of this job will be a lifting ability of up to 40 lbs. occasionally, walk and stand frequently and be in a temperature-controlled environment.
