Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC) is an independent organization that specializes in providing training and consulting services. Our mission is to assist manufacturers in increasing productivity, quality and customer satisfaction. Much of our work involves small to mid-sized manufacturing clients (SMMs).

Position Summary:

This Manufacturing Engineer will serve as a strategic consultant to small and medium sized Michigan manufacturers.  This person will lead our development of a proactive consulting practice to assist SMMs in using new or unfamiliar materials.  Many Michigan manufacturers are challenged with lightweighting existing products.  The main focus of this new position will be to help our clients address this challenge.

Advance the use of light-weighting materials among SMMs by combining strategic advising with in-depth technical analysis. Maintain and leverage technical expertise and relationships to serve clients. Provide strategic assessments of new materials and light-weighting technologies. Conduct background research in evaluating the feasibility and applications of new materials and technological concepts. Develop training programs or consulting practice areas appropriate for small manufacturers.


Additional Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Extensive materials background relevant to lightweighting (e.g., in plastics, composites, aluminum, etc.)
  • 5+ years of experience with authoring technical papers, reports, or program plans for technical and non-technical audiences on materials.
  • BS degree in Chemistry, Metallurgical, Material Science or Engineering required. MS or PhD preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience with research in materials in a government or industrial environment preferred.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Grant Management and proposal writing a plus.
  • Extensive experience in implementing new materials in a small-firm manufacturing environment.
