Job Overview
We are currently looking for a Principal Designer to join our team in Holland, MI. This is a hybrid position and offers the flexibility of working onsite a couple days a week and remote from a home office the other days of the week. Depending on your experience, you could be considered for a Principal Designer role or a Sr Principal Designer.
As a Principal Designer you will:
Plan and lead design projects, including creating concepts and designs that balance innovative design, functional and ergonomic requirements, and aesthetic appeal. May be first point of contact for some design functions contingent on project scope. Lead design projects through creative vision and influence, resulting in innovative product designs which offer new value to Haworth's customers. May be mentor within design group to broaden others' skills and knowledge and provide leadership in work environment.
Job Responsibilities
Provides intellectual basis of design aspects for development projects, including functions, features, statement-of-line, aesthetics, human factors, communication, training, product planning, and fit within portfolio, resulting in profitable, world-class product solutions.
Assists with creating general vision of creative direction and strategy. Communicates vision to ensure understanding; motivates team members to achieve goals and drive business objectives. Depending on project scope, coordinates and oversees work of internal design team, outside design consultants, in-house contractors, and suppliers, ensuring fit with brand/portfolio and customer needs.
Collaborates with other Design or Innovation members from all countries and sectors (if relevant) to brainstorm or create design strategies, concepts, or ideas, utilizing global company resources, to improve company's competitive position within design.
Mentors Industrial Designers, and/or interns by sharing design knowledge and expertise, offering suggestions, and giving support to develop individual and team knowledge, skills, and expertise to create highly skilled and collaborative world-class design studio atmosphere.
May establish and manage departmental project resources (financial and personnel) to meet agreed upon objectives.
Analyzes existing product offerings and recommends design changes or modifications to enhance product design appeal in marketplace to increase sales.
Develops working relationships with other functional groups, based on trust and respect for alternate points-of-view, leading to broad-based product solutions.
Fosters culture of "design criticism," requesting candid input and feedback during and after design process to create design process improvements and efficiencies and promote environment of continuous improvement.
Leads "innovation workshops" having cross-functional and cross-sector stakeholders to analyze global market trends and brainstorm innovative design ideas and concepts to cultivate environment of creativity and innovation.
Leads client visits, sharing design strategy and vision, while aligning with visit agenda to enhance customer experience.
Conducts field research with customers/Architectural and Design (A&D) members/dealers and collaborates with Global Innovation Team to influence proposals for new product concepts, line extensions, and improvements to portfolio.
Do you have these required qualifications?
Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design or a similar field (In lieuof degree, 2 years of experience is required for every year of education not complete).
Minimum of 7years of product design experience.
Minimum of 5 years of product development experience.
Current and continuing right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Ability to work onsite in Holland, MI without relocation assistance.
Do you have these preferred qualifications?
Experience mentoring/teaching.
Experience in architecture design, exhibit design, or interior design.
AI and social media communication experience.
Critical thinking.
