UNIT DESCRIPTION:The Mother Baby Care Unit is a 28-bed unit that cares for postpartum patients and newborns. Includes rotation within the maternal child health units with training after 6 months on the mother baby care unit.
GENERAL SUMMARY: Functions as a member of the health care team by providing patient and family education, acting as a consultant and resource for the medical and nursing staff, and by serving as a community resource for breast feeding related care throughout the organization, not just in Maternal Child Health. The Lactation Consultant uses specific age and culture - related physical, intellectual, psychosocial, and developmental attributes in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for breast feeding patients.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:

Education / Training:
* Associate's degree in nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
B. Work Experience:
* 2 years of recent maternal child experience. Prefer LC experience with NICU babies and outpatient visits.
C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:
* RN License in State of Michigan required. IBCLC and CLC certification preferred. IBCLC obtained within 18 months of hire.
D. Other Qualifications:
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Nursing Process: Develops and implements care plans for patients based on scientific research rationale. Assesses, counsels, and supports patients regarding breastfeeding problems.
. Education and Research: Develops, implements, and evaluates educational plans and teaching strategies related to breast feeding for patients/families, nursing staff, residents and physician staff. Participates in research related to breastfeeding care.
3. Collaboration: Acts as a liaison between patient/family, multidisciplinary team members, and community resources. Assists nursing staff in developing a plan of care to meet individual patient needs. Develops a discharge plan of care and makes appropriate referrals.
4. Compliance: Reviews policies and procedures, standards of care, and patient education materials related to care of the breastfeeding patient.
5. Communication: Communicates the goals and plan of care to patients and health care team members. Documents in EPIC all care provided to the patient. Communicates patient outcomes and changes to multidisciplinary team members.
6. Assists with maintenance of breastfeeding equipment and supplies.
7. Participates in data collection related to quality metrics that reflect breastfeeding initiatives and perinatal core measures. Initiates and implements quality improvement activities to ensure quality and effectiveness of the program. 8. Demonstration of competence in lactation consultant practice: complete, accurate and timely documentation of care, communication and collaboration with other health care professionals.
9. Formulates, implements, evaluate, and document patient and family education.
10. Responds to telephone calls from breastfeeding mothers after discharge.
11. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in current literature review, in-service meetings and workshops in the field of lactation.
12. Acts as a resource person for nurses, physicians, and patients.
13. Provides formal and informal education opportunities related to lactation for nurses, physicians, and community.
14. Orientation of the breastfeeding program to all new nursing employees.
15. Assess staff development needs related to breastfeeding knowledge and support, and prepares staff in first line lactation education and support techniques.
