The Manufacturing Engineer, Tooling applies engineering principles and theories for the design, optimization, detailing, and project management of injection mold tools, and other tooling as required using CAD tools. Be a proactive leader in areas of health safety and environment utilizing Saint-Gobain tools and teams. Work with area teams to complete Capex projects to accomplish plant tool improvement and expansion goals. This position is also responsible for the management of existing tooling to include design/print modifications, PM scheduling, storage and repairs to all existing tooling. The incumbent will work in unison with engineering, product development, application engineering, support to customers and other departments.
Manage the existing and future tooling inventory, to include design/print modifications, PM scheduling, storage, repairs to all existing tooling and ensuring proper CO documentation is captured and tracked for all existing and future tooling. Continually plan, develop, and execute projects to reduce waste through improved manufacturing and process efficiency, using WCM methodologies
Use Solidworks and other CAD software as required to design/modify and detail existing and future tooling. Select the correct geometry, material and finishes based on internal guidelines and safety reviews. Ensure that the design meets customer print and specification requirements as required, and that the designs are optimized for safety, manufacturability, assembly, and production use. Use material shrinkage, thermal expansion, pressure, and heat transfer calculations to ensure optimized mold tool designs and functionality.
Provide support to production and maintenance with tool/fixture designs, modifications, or assembly. Communicate the intent of the design or assembly to ease installation and use. Support Engineering/Operations/Customers in product development/process improvements through tooling/fixture optimization to improve yield, runtime, or other projects related to safety, quality, delivery, or cost.
Manage the manufacturing planning, scheduling and on time completion of tooling Capex orders through proper communication and critical thinking to support the effort to reduce lead time for new products and ensure project timelines are met.
Support the quote process, vendor selection, and design reviews for vendor supplied tooling procurement projects. Participate in 3rd party tool reviews and recommend design changes as needed to ensure that tool designs are compliant with internal requirements.
Work with operations supervisor, applications development department and customers to design, coordinate, implement, and maintain the continuous improvement projects for any of the functional areas of the site.
This position will also lead qualification activities for tool validation.
Utilize project management skills to plan and execute assigned projects; manage budget as required.
Understand and lead safety and ergonomic improvement activities
Communicate with all site stakeholders, such as leads, engineers, maintenance to meet internal and external customer needs.
Be actively involved in area teams and work towards sustaining our ISO Certification.
All else required by manager to help team reach performance goals.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Engineering required (Mechanical, Chemical or Biomedical engineering major preferred).
3+years' experience working in an Engineering capacity in a manufacturing environment required.
Strong mechanical design skills with working knowledge of GD&T, ability to utilize computer software to draw and design tooling/fixtures utilizing 3-D/2-D programs (Solid Works/AutoCAD) required.
Experience or interest working with silicone rubber thermoplastic elastomers and thermoplastic urethanes materials preferred.
