The Road Commissionof Grand Traverse County is looking for a dynamic individual who has a good sense of humor and strong work ethicto lead this approximately 50-person organization it mission to provide safe and efficient road systems for County residents.
Grand Traverse County is located in northern Lower Michigan and is a popular resort town. It is known for its year-round outdoor activities including boating, hunting, skiing, fishing and golf. In addition, Grand Traverse County boasts a number of wineries, breweries, restaurants and cultural facilities such as Interlochen Center for the Arts.
The Road Commission has been providing County services for over 100 years. The Manager role, which is the Chief Administrative Officer for the Road Commission, reports directly to the five-person Road Commission Board. This role manages an annual budget of $20 to $25 million, in addition to major projects, for this independently run organization.
The Grand Traverse County road system is comprised of 251 primary, 750 local and 224 State miles of road. The Road Commission is housed in a modern facility built in 2001 that features 6,000 sq. ft. of administrative offices, 15,800 sq. ft. of equipment storage, 10,000 T salt storage barn and a MDEQ/EPA approved fueling depot.
The ideal candidate will be an energetic, adaptable leader who has a successful history of leading engineering, road maintenance or construction management organizations. A bachelor’s degree is required in public administration, civil engineering, construction management or related fields. Significant executive-level experience in complex organizations required. Strong financial management and interpersonal skills required with broad understanding of road construction and maintenance highly desirable. High motivation, visionary leadership and a record of innovations are also considered important.
