MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from a high school or equivalent G.E.D.
- Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license and qualify to drive a Division vehicle in compliance with the Division Driver Policy.
- TPO II (A) a valid Michigan Class “D” Wastewater Operator’s certification is not required. If a TPO II (A) successfully obtains the “D” certificate, the incumbent will be promoted to the title of TPO II (B).
- TPO II (B) must have and maintain a valid Michigan Class “D” Wastewater Operator’s certification or equivalent from another state.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience working as a water or wastewater treatment plant operator or equivalent education as determined by the Employer.
- Must be able to work various shifts, irregular hours, including holidays and weekends (please note: this position shall follow the same language and receive the same benefits provided for Senior Treatment Plant Operators per Bargaining Unit Agreement Article 19, Hours of Work and Premium Hours with the exception of the 30 calendar day notification of schedule change. This position will only require a ten (10) day notice for a schedule change.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of seventy-five (75) pounds.
- Must be able to work in confined spaces and outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
- Must be able to walk over rough terrain and climb ladders and stairs.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Monitors and maintains wastewater treatment plant operations by collecting and analyzing data, performing operational checks and adjustments, servicing and maintaining equipment and facilities, as well as, biosolids handling and disposal. Collects and analyzes samples and data and adjusts treatment processes to respond to changing water quality conditions. Receives on the job training and experience. Assists in providing training to new employees as directed by Supervision or Management.
STATEMENT OF TASKS
- Operates various wastewater treatment plant equipment and performs minor maintenance on this equipment.
- Grease and oils pumps and equipment, and maintains equipment oil levels.
- Checks pumps, clarifiers, lagoon equipment, grinder and major pump stations, blowers, compressors, drives, chemical batching units, including storage, handling, installation, and feed rates for SO2 and Cl2, and all other treatment plant equipment and processes.
- As assigned, collects samples performs chemical analysis, recording results and maintaining accurate records and reports.
- Assists maintenance mechanic, senior treatment plant operator, instrument technician, lab technician, IPP technician and treatment plant supervision in troubleshooting plant operational problems when necessary.
- Routinely cleans and maintains equipment, and equipment areas, tanks and manholes.
- Unplugs sludge pumps, sewage pumps, and equipment.
- Collects data and prepares and maintains records and reports.
- Irrigates and mows fields.
- Requisitions tools and supplies.
- Troubleshoots operational problems.
- Operates electric and pneumatic power and hand tools.
- Responds to emergency calls.
- Performs any other work related to the classification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of wastewater treatment processes.
- Knowledge of basic math.
- Ability to operate VOM and AMP meters.
- Ability to prepare reports and records.
- Ability to operate electric and pneumatic power and hand tools.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate efficiently both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of computer system and relevant software.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and customers.
- Knowledge of standard safety practices, and mandatory safety regulations.
