Qualifications: * Education: * Graduate of accredited school of nursing, BS degree preferred. * Licenses/Certification: * Licensed as a RN (preferred). * Valid CPR teaching certificate, if applicable. * Experience: * Three years of nursing experience, of which one year was in a long term care environment. * Experience with Dementia/Alzheimer's Care (preferred) Essential Functions: * Develop, coordinate and implement programs and services for residents with cognitive impairment; to provide a therapeutic environment that maintains each resident's highest level of physical, social and psychological well-being. * Establishes a staffing pattern to accomplish stated objectives in standards of the unit. Reviews staffing pattern and census on unit daily. * Participates in General Management Functions such as hiring, scheduling, supervision ,disciplining and evaluating employees working on unit. * Supervises unit volunteer services. * Plans and facilitates meetings and committees to address resident care issues for the Dementia Unit. * Participates and provides inservices and all continuing education for employees, family members, and volunteers regarding the residents' disease process, behaviors, techniques and approaches. Pursues educational development in Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. * Coordinates interviews and assessment of all residents and families prior to admission ensures completion of pre-admission screening process. * Manages area of responsibility with the goal of achieving and maintaining the highest quality of care possible. * Participates in developing, implementing and evaluating programs that promote the recruitment, retention, development and continuing education of nursing staff members. * Contacts physicians as necessary and ensures physicians interventions are timely and appropriate * Monitors the clinical operations of the unit and resident's conditions and ensures that appropriate and quality care is administered. * Obtains medications, supplies and medical records needed to provide safe, efficient and therapeutic care to residents on a continuing basis. * Coordinates, with the team members, the development of the24 hour plan of care for the residents and updates progress in the medical record. * Assists in the orientation of new personnel, monitors their skills and guides and observes staff that may need assistance with procedures. * Participates in facility "QA" program * Becomes a community recognized expert and resource related to dementia care and Alzheimer's disease. * Acts as a liaison facilitating communication between the unit, facility, councils, family members and community * Advocates for the residents' rights and other care issues, and assists with obtaining basic needs such as clothing and personal iten]ms when the family is unable to do so.. * Performs other tasks as assigned. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: * Skilled in motivation of staff and leadership. * Skilled in work assessment. * Ability to communicate effectively with residents and their family members, and at all levels of the organization. * Knowledge of the unit objectives, policies and procedures/ * Knowledge of state and federal requirements for accreditation and certification. * Possesses basic computer skills * Ability to work with a culturally diverse resident and employee population.
