Description
Provides personal care to the patient or services which are needed to maintain the patient's health or to facilitate treatment of the patient's illness or injury. Functions in a supportive relationship to professional disciplines and may function as an extension of these professional services with appropriate supervision and guidance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Provides total personal care, or assists patient with their personal care including bed bath, tub bath or shower; dental, hair and nail care; shaving; dressing and undressing; elimination needs, including toileting, offering bedpan, urinal or assisting to bathroom; ambulating, transferring, positioning by using assistive devices such as walkers, wheelchairs and prescribed range of motion exercises when taught by health care professional. Performs other personal; care needs as identified by nursing staff.
Provides a clean and safe environment for the client by performing light housekeeping tasks such as doing patient's personal laundry, vacuuming, sweeping, and dusting of the patient's immediate environment and tidying the bathroom after bathing the patient; straightening the patient's room as necessary.
Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respirations and weight. Performs catheter care, urine testing and colostomy care as noted on the plan of care. Demonstrates competency with bowel protocol. Demonstrates proper application of various braces, splints and other orthopedic devises.
Provides nutritional support by feeding patient, maintaining intake and output records as requested, weighs patient, and is able to understand and operate gastric feeding devices.
Qualifications
High School graduate, or GED
Evidence of CHHA certification from another institution or through McLaren Home Health & Hospice.
Valid Michigan driver's license.
Successfully passes the IPCED Home Health Aide Competency Evaluation Test and Skills Demonstration Checklist.
Dependable transportation.
Access to a telephone.
Must provide proof of insurability.
One year of experience in a hospital, nursing home, or home care preferred.
Maintains twelve hours of continuing education per year.
