Position Summary
Member of the laboratory team for The Water Quality, Environmental, and Molecular Microbiology Laboratory (WQEMM) at Michigan State University.
Duties will include, but are not limited to: field collection of water samples; preparation, processing and testing of collected samples; data management and reporting of results. The ideal candidate will communicate and collaborate with on campus labs to complete projects and act as a MSU liaison for county health departments, DEQ and EPA to provide technical support and trouble shoot problems.
Additionally, the ideal candidate will also participate as part of the Global Water Pathogens Project (GWPP) team. Duties will include editing the website, supervision of one student and regular correspondence with participating scientists and website design team.
Working conditions involving working with potentially hazardous minor inhalation irritants and dry ice. The job requires moderate physical effort and involves standing and manual dexterity for microscopic studies 26-75% of the time.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience performing basic research techniques specific to the area of research employment such as: Tissue Culture, Analytical Research, Molecular Biology, Agriculture, Social Science, Physiology, Medical Research, etc., including the use and calibration of related equipment; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator''s registration/certification, and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals specific to the area of research employment.
Desired Qualifications
A Master’s degree in Fisheries and Wildlife; 5+ years of lab experience including experience with the following techniques: filtering Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR), Quantitative PCR (qPCR), Microbial Source Tracking (MST); experience with website editing and word processing software; knowledge of MSU policies and procedures; strong organizational skills to be able to manage, coordinate, prioritize multiple tasks and projects; ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
