Description
Under the supervision of a pathologist provides technical
assistance in all areas of anatomical pathology. Describes and examines
surgical specimens, performs autopsy pro-section, obtains appropriate specimens
for microscopic evaluation and describes findings. May assist in the preparation,
processing and determination of needle aspirates and renal biopsies.
Essential Functionsand Responsibilities:
Oversees the gross room,the frozen section area and morgue facilities.
Monitors the specimens asthey arrive in the gross room and accessions specimens as needed. Performsroutine gross dissection in consultation with the pathologist.
Assist in the preparation and dissection of humansurgical specimens, including:
a. Assures appropriatespecimen accessioning,
b. Obtains the clinicalhistory including scans, x-rays, laboratory data, etc.,
c. Describes gross anatomicfeatures, dissects surgical specimens and prepares tissues for processing,
d. Obtains biologicalspecimens for analysis (blood cultures, viral cultures, toxicologicalmaterial, flow cytometry, image analysis, etc.) and performs specialprocedures such as coronary artery perfusion studies, tumor triage, andfaxitron,
e. Photographs pertinentspecimens and microscopic slides as directed.
- Assistsin the preparation and performance of human postmortem examinations, including:
a. Ascertains proper legalauthorization for autopsy,
b. Retrieves patient's chartand other pertinent data for review,
c. Confers with thepathologist(s) to identify the special techniques and procedures required(e.g., histochemical, immunofluorescence, toxicological, viral orelectron microscopic suites, cultures, smears, etc.) and notifies allpersonnel directly involved,
d. Notifies the physician incharge, the funeral home liaison, and other authorities prior to thedissection to coordinate special requests for specimen sampling,
e. Performs postmortemexaminations, which may include: external examination, in situ organinspections, evisceration dissection and dictation or recording of dataand gross anatomic findings,
f. In collaboration with thepathologists(s), selects and prepares gross tissue sections,
g. Obtains biological specimensfor analysis (blood cultures, viral cultures, toxicological material,etc.) and upon direction for special procedures,
h. Photographs body, organs,microscopic slides, and other relative materials,
i. May assist in assemblingdata necessary for the preparation of the preliminary summarization ofthe clinical history,
j. Assists in the release ofthe body to the correct mortuary, following proper restoration andindicating any biohazards that may be present.
Maintains laboratory supplies inventory bychecking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies;placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
Conserves laboratory resources by using equipmentand supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
Prepares reports of technological findings bycollecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
May perform duties related to the administrativemaintenance of surgical pathology protocols, reports and data includingfiling of reports, protocols, photographic and microscopic slides andassuring completion of coding.
Responsible for assuring proper maintenance ofequipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgicalpathology suite.
May assist in the organization and coordinationof anatomic pathology conferences.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge byattending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications;establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
Maintains safe and clean working environment andprotects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardouswaste and other policies and protocols.
Performs other related duties as required anddirected.
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor'sDegree from a Pathology Assistant Program OR completion of a post-bachelor's program from an approvedschool of pathology OR Bachelorof Science with background in physiology and anatomy and three years ofpathology experience.
Certificationby the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), AAPA or NCA as a pathologists' assistant.
Preferred:
- Previousexperience assisting with gross description and dissection of surgicaltissue.
