Student Life Technology Solutions is seeking an enthusiastic and qualified systems administrator to play an active role in the support of Student Life's infrastructure and planning as we leverage Michigan IT & cloud based technologies. This position is responsible to function as a highly capable member of the Student Life Infrastructure & Operations team. The team manages numerous virtual and physical Windows, Linux, and Macintosh servers. The team is also responsible for all areas of system administration on these servers and end user support related to account administration and server-based applications. This position will require being part of an on-call team and occasional over-time.
40% - Server, Application, Database, & System Administration and Integration
- Under direct supervision, manage servers, applications, and databases including installation, monitoring, patching, configuring interfaces, performance tuning, maintenance, and backups
- Work in partnership with ITS and other campus units to provide services that align with Michigan IT offerings and initiatives
- Document the server and application environments and their related policies and procedures to ensure effective problem resolution and incident routing
- Manage Active Directory (AD) OUs involving account, group, and group policy management and troubleshooting; setting up file directory access; user account creation and password resetting
- Administer Windows and Linux application, database, and web servers
- Assist with the design, implementation, and help to ensure the proper execution of a disaster recovery plan for all business critical systems including automating monitoring and alerts and documentation of the plan
- Assist in coordinating installation and system implementation of major software applications
- Troubleshoot web server applications
30% - Infrastructure Support
- Develop and update procedures and guidelines to install, patch, configure, customize, troubleshoot, upgrade, integrate and maintain Windows, Linux, and Mac servers in accordance with established IT policies and procedures
- Evaluate new technologies and services, recommend solutions to management, and implement as appropriate
- Collaborate with developers to securely deploy and troubleshoot web applications and services
- Interact with technical staff, end-users, and service provider to resolve problems and communicate system outages
- Assess servers, databases, and systems to determine if they are adequate for required tasks and recommend upgrades as appropriate
- Support web, file, database, and server-based application services
- Assist in the development and maintain documentation of procedures, services, workflow, and best practices
- Identify gaps in established procedures/processes and make recommendations for implementing improvements
- Assist in the creation and documenting of new solutions that leverage automation tools in an effort to more efficiently complete standard work
20% - Security Design, Implementation, and Monitoring
- Act as Security Unit Liaison & represent Student Life interests to the campus community
- Coordinate system security activities including security patches, monitoring for unauthorized access, password resets, user access control, and compliance with recognized security standards
- Investigate and respond to security incidents
- Analyze, review and improve current security practices
10% - Infrastructure Architecture
- Assist in the overall design of infrastructure systems involving servers, applications, databases, networks, and security
- Collaborate with Student Life business units, technical staff, and vendors to architect and build infrastructure systems that integrate with the Michigan IT environment and meet the business unit's functional requirements
- Involve users, system administrators and unit partners in planning efforts to implement and support major infrastructure changes
- Communicate regularly and openly with Student Life business units, technical staff, and vendors to engage transparently during projects
