Information and Technology Services (ITS) is looking for a Data Scientist Intermediate to join the Information Quest team within ITS. We are a customer-obsessed organization focused on delighting customers with laser sharp service. This position will be part of a high performing and innovative data team responsible for enabling data-informed decision-making at University of Michigan. Data Analysis will be based on a wide variety of university business areas, including administrative systems, learning analytics, and new data opportunities arising all the time. The team delivers data solutions to a wide cross section of executive leaders, faculty and staff. The Data Scientist will assist Information Quest in enabling U-M leaders to make strategic, data-informed decisions by transforming and interpreting institutional data into meaningful insights and actionable information.
We’re looking to hire someone who can help us transform data into action. Though it is helpful to know something about statistics and data mining, this position is primarily focused on gaining insight from messy, real-world data by writing understandable and reusable code, and by developing standard methods for machine-learning and predictive analytics.
- Identify, gather, analyze and interpret data from various sources to support decision-making and forecasting for university business.
- Identify new predictive modeling, machine learning, and advanced analytics methodologies based on the available data sets and implement dynamic models/algorithms focused on finding insights in the data.
- Lead the design, development, testing, and validation of multiple modeling design concepts to include but not limited to statistical, mathematical, and simulation models.
- Write, test, and implement programs to clean, merge, and analyze large, complex datasets.
- Analyze complex data sets using research methods, quantitative and qualitative analyses, and statistical techniques to provide critical information to administrators.
- Work with Business Intelligence Analysts to provide data to create meaningful, insightful data visualizations.
- Apply the best available techniques to the task of drawing inferences from data.
- Summarize, interpret, and present results in written, tabular and visual formats.
- Develop, streamline, error-proof, and automate processes for managing data and producing reports.
- A bachelor’s in data science, statistics, informatics, econometrics, or other science or social science field directly related to this position.
- Minimum of one-year relevant experience in statistical data analysis, modeling, programming, and simulation.
- Experience with Python, complex SQL queries. Code stores for collaboration in github repositories.
- Working knowledge of, and experience with various statistical analysis techniques, such as analyses of variance, factor analysis, reliability analysis, natural language processing, statistical process control, linear and hierarchical modeling, etc.
- Experience with complex data structures and linkages between data sources.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to explain analyses to non-data experts and administrators. Mastery of writing clear and concise documentation, summaries of methodologies, and descriptions of statistical results.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and experience working with diverse populations.
- Adaptable; proven ability to be open to and accepting of new ideas.
- Experience explaining data visualizations and statistical descriptors to audiences who are both unfamiliar and extremely familiar with statistics and data science.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and efficiently work on multiple projects at the same time.
