POSITION PURPOSE
Directs and develops integrated communications strategies and teams to strengthen and protect Trinity Health's reputation and brand, and advance engagement among internal and external audiences. Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, this position has well-rounded expertise in all aspects of communications and media relations. Oversees and supports various communications functions and channels (media relations, social media and internal channels). Collaborates with senior executives and partners to ensure messaging is unified and meaningful to support mission critical initiatives and achieve business goals. Partners with health ministry Communications to operate as an integrated and best in class team that engages members and amplifies the system's voice in the industry. This position aligns priorities and timelines based on resources and effectively manages a variety of people and situations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Knows, understands, incorporates and demonstrates the mission, vision and values of Trinity Health in leadership behaviors, practices and decisions.
Directs and supports national communications strategies to ensure smooth change management and success of priority strategic initiatives across the system. Ensures alignment of system and HM communication strategies with priority strategic aims and the related timing for system-wide initiative implementation.
Serves as a strategic advisor on synergies or conflicts that may arise with implementation of system priorities in terms of timing and/or messaging. Provides counsel and guidance to senior executives on communications strategies and change management and how they affect overall implementation, especially as it relates to implementation of strategic priorities and shared platforms. Secures earned media to drive external brand and market share, patient engagement and acquisition. Accountable for the performance of multiple specialty areas including media relations, executive communications, social media, internal communications, brand communications and channel management. Responsible for the performance of large-scale initiatives impacting all HMs. Serves as public information officer for the Incident Command team (as outlined by FEMA) for crises including clinical systems failures, security breaches and others.
Possesses a fundamental understanding for how to tell a compelling story across multiple communication channels; translate internal stories and develop appropriate earned media strategies.
Inspires, coaches and develops Marketing and Communications' team. Sets clear objectives, meets frequently to provide feedback on progress and builds an effective team.
Influence executive leaders and other stakeholders concerning communications strategy and messaging; exhibit confidence (without ego) and provide constructive coaching and direction regarding media.
Oversees and provides inspirational leadership to managers, professional specialists and regional staff responsible for media relations, social media, executive communications and internal communications. Leads improvements and implementation initiatives, successfully providing change management leadership for communications team and teams throughout the organization.
Innovates, especially in new media channels, to inspire audiences to connect with Trinity Health, share their stories and advance our mission. Leads development of communications strategies and tactics including tool kits, templates, messages and more, as well as channels to connect with colleagues nationwide. Sets objectives and oversees collection of feedback, measurement and reporting of results to team members and senior executives. Develops and manages budget, policies and processes for effective operational communications at every level including resource allocation especially people capacity). Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws/regulations; the Trinity Health Integrity and Compliance Program and Code of Conduct; as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field with seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressively responsible management experience in communications strategy and operational oversight in large, national/global organizations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree is preferred.
Experience within healthcare industry including hospitals, health systems, payers or providers is required.
Expertise in developing strategic and cohesive national media relations strategies and internal communications strategies especially within a matrix organization; strong understanding of employee engagement, leadership development, change management and social media.
An excellent communications track record with an understanding of the key levers within the management of a complex organization operating within the context of industry-wide reform.
Experience executing innovative strategies and risk-taking communications practices, resulting in establishment of a connection with internal and external audiences in exciting, energetic new ways.
Ability to lead by a collaborative leadership style through direct, open and honest communications.
Subject matter expertise of all tactical aspects of communications and public relations including, but not limited to, brand marketing, photography, graphics, layouts, publishing software, email marketing tools, web content management systems, presentations, speech writing, media pitching, writing and editing.
Expertise in communications and media data analysis and reporting, including experience in using data to make the case for a new approach or for more resources.
Exceptional interpersonal communication skills with the ability to influence, build strong relationships and provide counsel to colleagues at all levels including senior executives.
Expertise in clinical communications including advanced payment models and CMS programs, as well as strategies for engaging affiliated physicians and clinicians, and nurses through innovative communications strategies.
Ability to obtain and maintain a clear understanding of operational areas including clinical, human resources, revenue cycle, information technology, supply chain, electronic health records, and more.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Position operates in a typical office environment. The area is well-lit, temperature-controlled and free from hazards. Position communicates frequently, in person and over the telephone, with people in a number of different locations across the country.
Expresses a true comfort with ambiguity and an interest in an evolving and dynamic environment; easily adapts thinking and approach as the situation changes.
Ability to prioritize and make decisions, handle multiple projects and priorities simultaneously; strong organizational skills; highly self-motivated and self-directed; attentive to detail. Must be able to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
4. Manual dexterity is needed in order to operate a keyboard. Hearing is needed for extensive telephone and in person communications.
Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles.
6. Must be able to travel to the various Trinity Health sites as needed.
