Field Service Engineer
Location: Dearborn, MI
Job Summary
The Field Service Engineer is responsible for safely and efficiently operating, monitoring and performing routine maintenance on all equipment located across multiple sites in the Dearborn, MI area. Equipment includes 35 Caterpillar diesel generators with sizes ranging between 2 to 2-1/2 MW each and a 12-MW Solar Gas Turbine with associated switchgear, controls, fuel tanks and misc. auxiliary equipment.
This is a represented "Journeymen" level position requiring advanced experience and knowledge of instrumentation and controls, low, medium and high voltage switchgear, transformers, generators, protective relays and motor control centers.
This person will report to the Plant Manager of DTE Dearborn CEP, LLC and must be able to function independently with minimal oversight and direction.
Key Accountabilities
- Maintains all equipment in good and operable condition.
- Performs maintenance on motor control centers, motor operated valves, generators, excitation equipment, compressors, fans, motors, and other equipment as assigned.
- Performs preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance on equipment, coordinating work with various team members.
- Provides input on the design and installation of new equipment and/or system modifications.
- Troubleshoots and performs maintenance on DC backup power equipment, UPS systems, process controls, programmable logic controls (PLC) and emission monitoring equipment.
- Uses a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to record hours spent and material used, problems identified and corrected, and any further action required. Builds complete history of maintenance on all equipment.
- Schedules, coordinates and works with contractors on specific tasks as required.
- Always follows safe working practices and ensures contractors understand and follow the established safety rules and regulations when working on site.
- Identifies and corrects safety hazards and recommends solutions.
- Follows environmental compliance work practices.
- Identifies environmental non-compliance problems and assists in implementing solutions.
- Assists in the training of new and existing team members.
- Performs housekeeping assignments as required.
- Conducts equipment and system LOTO according to company rules and regulations.
- Perform equipment safety inspections as required and record results as appropriate.
- Participates in small construction projects. Reads and interprets drawings, sketches, prints and specifications as required.
- Submits requisitions and orders parts and materials as needed to affect maintenance and repair.
- Performs Operations tasks on an as-needed basis and other tasks as assigned.
- Available within a reasonable response time for emergency call-ins and overtime plus able to provide acceptable off-hour contact by phone.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
- Minimum (5) years of relevant experience with diesel backup generators, switchgear, instrumentation and controls, PLC's and protective relaying.
- High school or vocational school diploma.
- Associates degree (or equivalent) desired.
Other Qualifications
- Working knowledge of power plant operations and engineering functions and their interrelation to maintenance.
- A thorough and demonstrated understanding of electrical generator power plant operations, strong understanding of gas turbine technology, mechanics, hydraulics, electricity, power distribution, and electronics.
- Understanding of accounting systems as relates to work orders, PM's, and spare parts inventories.
- Planning, coordinating and directing varied programs and tasks directly involved with the operation and maintenance of the equipment.
- Ability to analyze potentially complex operational problems and identify solutions.
- Competent computer skills, especially Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Excel and Word).
- Solid knowledge of electrical plant engineering and plant maintenance functions and how they relate to operations and income.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to comprehend and apply technical information, including mechanical and electrical drawings (blueprints, P&IDs, single-line diagrams and schematics) to problem-solving situations and troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in the use of electrical testing equipment including but not limited to: multimeters, meggers, grounding equipment and proper PPE associated with the use of this equipment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
