GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general direction, performs and reports routine or select clinical laboratory tests and procedures in one or more sections of the laboratory.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Under supervision, performs select chemical, hematologic microscopic, morphologic, immunologic, and/or microbiologic procedures involving manual procedures or the use of complex laboratory instruments.
2. Uses training and clinical judgment to evaluate instrument performance and quality control results to determine the accuracy and reliability of analytic data before it is released; recognizes and refers implausible results or special/unusual circumstances to medical technologist or supervisor.
3. Standardizes, calibrates, operates, performs preventive maintenance and limited troubleshooting on select laboratory equipment or instruments within established parameters.
4. Assists in gathering data for the evaluation, correlation, and introduction of new instrument or procedures.
5. Participates in the training of students, residents, and new employees in the performance of select routine procedures; attends/ participates in department continuing education and in-service programs.
6. Participates in various quality assurance and regulatory agency activities in the department including the gathering of data for quality assurance monitors; developing and adherence to safe work practices; TQM/CQI committees, etc.
7. Participates in:
* Q.I./process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys as applicable to the assigned department.
* Staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO)
* Friend-at-Work program and assists in training new hires as applicable/assigned
* Staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned
8. Cost effectiveness: Efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and timely. Mindful of appropriate use of laboratory funds through purchase requests and the observance of wasteful use of supplies
9. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned, including inventory control reagent prep, specimen processing / distribution / storage tasks, etc.
Required Qualifications:
* Associate of science degree in Medical Laboratory Technician (Clinical Laboratory Technician) or related sciences AND successful graduation from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Medical Laboratory Technician (Clinical Laboratory Technician) program; OR
* Commensurate laboratory experience as determined by department management:
* i.e., baccalaureate level Beaumont Medical Laboratory Science Student who has been working as a laboratory assistant in a laboratory section and has successfully completed the clinical
LABORATORY rotation in that respective laboratory section
* ASCP Medical Laboratory Technician - MLT(ASCP)
* ASCP International Medical Laboratory Technician - MLT(ASCPi)
