Job Description Summary
The Department of Physics at Michigan Technological University (MTU) seeks a candidate to fill a faculty position as a tenure-track Assistant Professor starting in August of 2023. Applicants with the required education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and accomplishments commensurate with a higher rank will also be considered for an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Current astrophysics research at MTU includes gamma-ray and cosmic-ray astrophysics, astroparticle physics, cosmology, large-scale structure, galaxy evolution, dark matter, and machine-learning applications in astrophysics. MTU physics faculty are actively involved in the cosmic-ray and gamma-ray experiments Auger and HAWC as well as in research & development for the SWGO project.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
Teach both undergraduate and graduate-level courses. Develop a sustainable externally funded research program. Be recognized by your peers for your excellence in research and creation of knowledge. Foster and contribute to a collaborative DEIS culture within the workplace. Engage in professional service activities within the department, university, community, and technical organizations. Employees are expected to apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work and commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
A record of substantive research in astrophysics
Desirable Education and/or Experience
Experience collaborating in multi-wavelength and/or multi-messenger astrophysics research, or astronomy outreach is desirable; substantive research experience in one or more of the following: gamma-ray and cosmic-ray astrophysics, astroparticle physics, cosmology, large-scale structure, galaxy evolution, dark matter, and machine-learning applications in astrophysics
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)
Ability to develop a sustainable externally funded research program
Ability to be recognized by peers for excellence in research and creation of knowledge
Ability to foster and contribute to a collaborative DEIS culture
Preference will be given to astrophysics researchers that will enhance and complement the current research activities.

Researchers that display excellence in any area of astrophysics.

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
