The Department of Cardiac Surgery is seeking a Research Laboratory Technician Associate in the Westfall laboratory at the University of Michigan. The candidate will work closely with the principal investigator in a basic science laboratory. Primary responsibilities for this position are to maintain and test genetically engineered and wildtype rodents, utilize PCR to identify positive mice, and collect and analyze myocardial tissue samples. Individuals in this position also are expected to contribute to perform molecular biology, primary cell culture, and protein biochemistry studies. This position is located at the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC).
1. Responsible for breeding, maintenance and positive identification of genetically engineered and wildtype animal models. Individual also serves as health contact for animals and contact for animal-related core services.
2. Responsible for morphological, histological, and molecular biology analyses of tissue samples from animal models, and for the documentation and management of this acquired data.
3. Contributes to the isolation and culture of primary adult cardiac myocytes.
4. Contributes to work on protein expression, cell physiology and myofilament biophysics.
This position requires an individual with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Physiology, or a closely related field, and at least 1 year of “bench” research experience. Applicants must be hard working, enthusiastic, highly motivated, and well organized. They should also be capable of following instructions, have the ability to work efficiently, and perform duties independently and as part of a team. Successful candidates must have quantitative analysis skills and 1 year of research experience in one or more of the following approaches: primary cell culture, molecular biology (DNA/RNA), histology, protein biochemistry (e.g. SDS-PAGE/Western analysis), and immunohistochemistry. Applicants are expected to be detail- and goal-oriented, with strong interpersonal and time management skills.
Research experience (1-3 years) with rodent animal models and molecular biology experience are highly desirable. In addition, experience with primary cardiac myocyte culture, and protein biochemistry is preferred.
