Mercy Health Saint Mary's - 3Lacks Unit is a Step down/high acuity unit. All patients are of age 65 years or older. Patients are very fragile, often have co-morbidities. Lots of sepsis, heart failure, respiratory failure patients. The patients often are coming in through the emergency room so it is an unplanned/crisis visit. Many patients have their families with them or involved in the care. Looking for candidates passionate and compassionate about caring for the elderly population. New hires will go through a Geriatric certification program online. Average patient stay is 4 days. PCAs do not have an assigned patient ratio but instead utilize a float model where everyone on the unit is responsible for answering any call light.

This designation is achieved primarily through the outcomes demonstrated on our Senior Adult Unit (3 Lacks) and through the partnerships we have with our Geriatricians (22 of them) and our Long Term Care facilities.
Position Summary:
Patient Care Assistant, PCA works in a collaborative environment to deliver excellent patient care under the direction of a RN. A Patient Care Assistant, PCA is expected to assist the patient in maintaining good hygiene, activities of daily living and to support quality of patient care.
What Patient Care Assistant, PCA will do:
Respond to patient call lights for assistance or by rounding
Obtaining vital signs from patient
Provide or assist patients with personal hygiene including showers, oral hygiene and dressing/undressing
Transports patients as needed for procedures, transfers or discharge
Maintains a clean and uncluttered environment in patient rooms
What Patient Care Assistant, PCA will need:
High School diploma or equivalent
One of the following: Nurses Aide Certificate (CNA), RN student currently enrolled and has completed two full clinical rotations and/or six months experience as a Patient Care Assistant or Nurse Technician in an acute care setting
BCLS certification
Well developed communication skills, both written and oral
Able to communicate effectively with individuals and groups representing divers perspectives
Articulates and demonstrates commitment to the philosophy, values, mission and vision of the organization
