Position Summary:
HME technicians are responsible for processing HME physician orders (e.g. intake, inputting, insurance verification, refilling, restocking, billing/crediting) accurately and in a timely basis. HME technicians provide patient counseling, fittings, and equipment for discharged inpatients, outpatients (e.g. ER, sleep laboratory), and walk-in patients. Technicians ensure HME equipment performs safely and effectively according to manufacturer's specifications and strive for 100% patient satisfaction. They perform equipment set-ups (e.g. CPAP/BiPAP home oxygen), promote compliance, and resolve patient issues.
Qualifications:
Minimum high school education, previous experience in hospital/retail/industry related to HME, especially with sleep apnea therapy. Excellent customer service skills, patient teaching, accuracy and high attention to detail, equipment testing, and computer experience are required.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Support safe use of HME equipment
Contribute to cost containment initiatives
Triage phone calls and walk-in requests for information about HME equipment and sleep apnea set-ups.
Assess patients' HME needs; direct to specific products, and provide HME fitting.
Receive and input initial and refill HME physician orders, patient demographics, and insurance information into the HME computer system.
Investigate insurance coverage and obtain prior authorization when necessary.
Instruct patients on the safe and appropriate use and maintenance of HME equipment in the patient's home.
Dispense or coordinate delivery of HME equipment and supplies according to physician orders and insurance coverage.
Maintain HME inventory and supplies; clean returned equipment
Handle cash and other monies according to department/hospital policies
Interact with physician offices for providing required documentation
Comply with federal, state, insurers and regulatory agency requirements for HME services
Schedule and perform CPAP / BiPAP set-ups, including patient education/training
Adjust equipment as prescribed
Resolve needs for equipment and patient issues
Provide patient education on proper use and safety issues involving HME equipment
Perform necessary compliance downloads; forward data to ordering physician; counsel patients as needed to increase compliance
