Job Description
GM is hiring engineers to work on the Electrical, mechanical, structural and thermal designs of advanced battery packs and will need a wide variety of engineers with divers technical backgrounds. The Advanced Battery Engineer is responsible for the design of specific high voltage, lithium-ion propulsion battery subsystems and components (battery pack components include battery pack structural components, cell modules, battery electrical hardware, including wiring and bussing, and battery thermal system components).
This is an opportunity to work on the latest battery technology to equip General Motors' burgeoning electrified vehicle portfolio with groundbreaking battery technology that will own the industry (BEVs and PHEVs), while working with a high-performance, creative, and innovative team. This role will directly affect the cost, quality, durability and performance of future GM electrified vehicles, and is a direct contributor to GM's Zero Emissions Vision.
Responsibilities:
* Work with the Advanced Battery Pack Global Lead Engineer, Project Lead Engineer and Systems Engineer to execute RESS components' design that meets requirements.
* Design and package battery electrical, structural, module, and thermal components.
* Work with Designers to ensure interface and packaging compatibility both internal to a battery pack, as well as externally.
* Work with other Component and Lead Engineers to select and design appropriate components, while reusing parts where appropriate.
* Work with manufacturing to ensure build-ability and to resolve quality requirements.
* Work with service to ensure efficient serviceability.
* Support the Battery Execution team and Purchasing in early sourcing activities for key components.
* Support DFMEAs at Battery Pack level.
* Ensure component designs support safety and thermal requirements for the Vehicle, Propulsion System and Battery Pack.
* Build and lead component timing plans.
* Execute and support Peer Reviews per program achievements.
* Work with system and component suppliers to benchmark and ensure requirements are met.
* Understand the competitive landscape with respect to your specific role and area of responsibility.
Additional Job Description
Requirements:
* Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
* 3+ years of experience in batteries, electrification or vehicle engineering.
* Proficient in analyzing data and crafting presentations.
* Excellent understanding of engineering theory and principles of automotive energy storage systems.
* Technical writing ability to build engineering evaluation reports.
* Ability to read, interpret and generate engineering drawings and specifications.
* Familiarity with CAD and CAE.
Desired Skills:
* Master's degree in Engineering.
* 5+ years of related engineering experience.
* Battery Pack and/or Battery component experience.
* High voltage or electrified vehicle safety training and hands-on work experience.
* 5+ years' experience with a major automotive OEM and/or Tier 1 supplier.
* Design for Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt Certification.
* Experience with Unigraphics NX.
* Experience in structural, thermal, flow and electrical analysis.
