The duties associated with this position include:
Contract administrator and chief negotiator for the University of Michigan for one or more academic bargaining units. This role involves:
• leading University bargaining team as chief negotiator in contract negotiations and contract implementation matters;
• providing strategic advice to University stakeholders and academic units regarding contract compliance, interpretation and application;
• participation in the development and delivery of contract training for deans, associate deans, chairs and other academic administrators;
• representing University in meetings with the union in formal and informal conference settings and facilitating discussion and resolution of complex issues between the University and Unions;
• investigating grievances; preparing and issuing grievance responses and conducting grievance hearings in concert with schools, colleges, and institutes;
• partnering in labor relations strategy development;
The Associate Director of Academic Human Resources also:
• advises the schools, colleges, institutes and centers on the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses regarding University policies and procedures and Provost Office and Human Resource procedures and programs as they relate to academic employees;
• provides daily consultation to Schools and Colleges on personnel matters related to tenure-track, research-track and clinical-track faculty, lecturers, post-doctoral research fellows and graduate student assistants (graduate student instructors (GSI), graduate student staff assistants (GSSA) and graduate student research assistants (GSRA)) and regarding University policies and procedures;
• assists in the administration of the faculty grievance procedure on the Ann Arbor campus.
• participates in special projects, related to appointment and termination protocols for a wide variety of ‘academic’ appointees.
• supports and contributes to the diversity, equity and inclusion efforts of the University, including respect for diverse views and approaches, and contributes to maintaining a professional environment.
• solves problems and conflicts productively and proactively;
• compiles, analyzes, and leverages data for various needs and purposes.
A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required; a juris doctorate or an advanced degree in a related profession is preferred. Minimum of 5 years of professional experience working in an academic environment and/or with employee or labor relations responsibilities, including participation in the collective bargaining process. Must be able to demonstrate strong consensus building skills and in-depth understanding of labor law. Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment, interpret and to analyze and apply organizational policy and employ advanced reasoning skills. Requires the ability to effectively communicate, and to develop effective strategies to solve complicated issues in a complex organization.
