Description
Collects and prepares blood samples for laboratory testing. Enters collections of such specimens in lab information system. Assists medical technologists and/or pathologists in performing designated laboratory tests. Assists with maintaining laboratory equipment and records following established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards.
Responsibilities:
Uses skin puncture and venipuncture techniques to obtain blood samples.
Follows defined process in obtaining samples including verifying patient information, labeling specimen vials, and matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Disposes of contaminated needles in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into appropriate system(s).
Processes specimens according to established guidelines.
Organizes blood-drawing trays, ensuring that all instruments are sterile and all needles, syringes, or related items are of first-time use.
Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.
Performs other related duties as required and directed.

- Certified as a phlebotomy technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOR).
