The Pediatric Trauma Clinical Reviewer (PTCR) primary role is to improve care for injured children though quality improvement. They will be responsible for identifying areas of opportunity to improve clinical care, efficiency and fiscal responsibility within the pediatric trauma patient population. They will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting clinical data elements for the Pediatric Trauma Quality Improvement Program (PTQIP), National Trauma Data Bank and C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital Pediatric Trauma Program registry eligible cases as required for continued Level I Pediatric Trauma Verification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The PTCR will work collaboratively with the trauma medical director, trauma program manager and trauma team to monitor the program’s Quality Improvement activities. The PTCR will work collaboratively with the pediatric trauma registrar to collect and submit reliable data to PTQIP, NTDB and the State of Michigan in a timely manner.
- The PTCR is required to independently manage their case load and report data to PTQIP according to established standards and deadlines. This is accomplished through high-quality data compilation, validation, documentation, and entry into the trauma registry on all PTQIP eligible patients.
- The PTCR will work under the supervision of the Pediatric Trauma Medical Director and Pediatric Trauma Program Manager and collaboratively with the Pediatric Trauma Registrar to develop and implement standard practices, policies, and procedures that support effective and efficient capture of data that are valid and reliable.
- The PTCR will maintain a relationship with the C. S. Mott Pediatric quality programs to ensure that quality initiatives are communicated within the entire pediatric community.
- The PTCR must be on-site and interact with the clinical team through rounding, direct face-to-face contact, telephone/media, and trauma program meetings as needed.
- The PTCR is required to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as requested.
- Evaluation and presentation of PTQIP benchmarking reports as they become available. This will include the development and identification of opportunities for improvement based on these reports.
- Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to; attending pediatric trauma meetings and data abstractor meetings as a representative of the institution, acting as a resource regarding the consortium within their institution, maintaining regular contact with members of the trauma team at the institution, preparing for and being available for site audits by the ACS and resolving data discrepancies.
- Five years minimum of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse (BSN preferred) or equivalent (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant); trauma experience preferred.
- Previous experience with data abstraction from medical records, and or analyzing and interpreting processes of care, and clinical outcomes is preferred.
- Other required skills include excellent written and verbal communication as well as working knowledge of computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and trauma registry applications.
Candidate will be expected to work 40 hours per week with possible evenings and weekends. Statewide travel may be needed as circumstances necessitate.
