POSITION SUMMARY:
The Prevention Specialist is responsible for developing, coordinating, and conducting substance abuse prevention and education services for clients of the Sault Tribe’s Health Division, Health Division professionals, community groups, schools and students located in our service area. The Prevention Specialist will be required to implement tribal plans and coordinate projects related to prevention initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
· Provides substance abuse prevention consultation services for the Sault Tribe Health Division, other tribal departments, schools, students and community groups.
· Develops and submits proposals for substance abuse prevention and education services.
· Develops, plans, and conduct education programs and assesses their success according to established goals.
· Maintains documentation of services provided and submits timely reports to fiduciary agents and tribal administrators as required.
· Establishes and maintains liaisons between the Health Division and other public and private agencies, community organizations, and
professional groups.
· Reviews and prepares marketing strategies and distributes substance abuse educational materials, including reports, pamphlets, posters, exhibits, news releases, and radio scripts. (Implements strategies to raise awareness of alcohol and drug related issues)
· Gathers information and analyzes data for the purpose of evaluating and adjusting programs in accordance with approved plans, guidelines and initiatives.
· Provides consultation and guidance to individuals and community groups.
· Pursues funding opportunities in the form of grants and assists in writing for these proposals.
· Attends training local, state, and national conferences relevant to current alcohol and drug related problems and trends.
· Provides technical advice in developing substance abuse prevention and education protocols.
· Conduct surveys regarding substance abuse and related issues to develop new prevention/education programs.
· Develop, update and maintain the department’s community awareness internet web page.
· Conducts community and individual prevention education needs assessments and makes patient and community prevention education plan recommendations to the prevention committee.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
· Attends all required prevention education in-service training activities.
· Serves as a resource to assist individuals, other professionals or the community as needed.
· Coordinates coalition groups and committees as needed.
· Participates in community substance abuse prevention coalitions.
· Travels frequently to local meetings in the seven county service areas.
· All other job related duties as assigned.
CONTACTS:
Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, other department managers, customers, patients, students, schools, youth and, outside vendor/service providers, other prevention specialists and coalition members, and healthcare providers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position requires occasional light lifting up to 20 pounds and frequent lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing, smell, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision; frequent standing, walking, sitting, typing; occasional carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, bending, manual handling and travel. Working conditions include frequent exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold, wet/humidity, noise and occasional exposure to poor air quality. Potential hazards include frequent computer use, frequent client contact and exposure to electric shock and equipment.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in public or community health education, social work, substance abuse counseling or healthcare related field is required.
Experience: Two years of experience working as Prevention Specialist or in the substance abuse field is required
Certification/License: Certified Prevention Specialist, Substance Abuse Counselor or Recovery Coach credentialing is preferred. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to use word processing, spreadsheet and data base software. Knowledge of standard safe and healthy work procedures. Knowledge of HIPAA and confidentiality standards and regulations required. Knowledge of national, state and local prevention education resources preferred. Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with a diverse range of audiences and settings. Must have excellent communication skills and be sensitive to cultural and economic diversity. Must have excellent organization skills; organizing work, prioritizing tasks and managing time. Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision. Must be able to establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors and the general public. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable. Must be able to be sensitive to the cultural dimensions of health education in Native American communities. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
