The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge is seeking an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent that wants to develop professionally and be a part of the golf course maintenance team to maintain the quality turf conditions at our wilderness 9-hole golf course.
The position will initially be an understudy with the current golf course superintendent, Bill Alband, who will be retiring at the end of the 2021 season. Bill has been working on the golf course at the resort for more than 25 years. After the 2021 season, you will transition into the head superintendent position.
This position will start in April / May 2021 with a focus on the summer activities at the Lodge’s golf course. The main requirement is the summer operations and ensuring the golf course is in good condition for golfers. However, ideally the candidate will want to work year round at the Lodge. This would entail focusing on growing grass, and the winter maintaining the trails (grooming).
Primary responsibilities and activities performed
The assistant golf course superintendent’s main job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- the day to day operation under the guidance of the superintendent
- organize and implement the daily tasks of the golf course maintenance personal
- help create pesticide and fertilizer programs with the Superintendent and make sure programs are followed throughout the season
- Develop the plan for becoming a certified Audubon Society Golf Course
- Equipment operator
- Mowing grass
- Water management
- Fertilizer and pesticide applications
- Spray application record keeping
- Task scheduling
- Communicate with personnel
- Train staff members
Recommended job qualifications:
- 1-2 years of experience in golf course maintenance
- Minimum 2-year college agronomy degree preferred
- Either have already, or able to obtain, a Michigan Pesticide applicators license within the 2021 golf season
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements and record keeping as required by local, state and federal laws
