Position Summary
The Department of Forestry at Michigan State University is seeking an outstanding Research Associate (Postdoctoral Researcher) to conduct data analysis and modeling on a long-term NSF-funded project entitled: “Woody seedling dynamics, climate, and species coexistence in a wet tropical forest.” Project focal areas include effects of climate on tree reproductive output, seedling survivorship (including interactions with density dependent mortality agents), mature tree growth and survival, and stand productivity. Data sets, some spanning 20+ years, include seedling establishment, survivorship, and growth (measured every 6 weeks); resource measurements (% canopy openness and soil nutrients); mapped forest stands; mature tree flowering/ fruiting level, survivorship, and growth; and local weather for La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. The successful candidate will be expected to work with the PI and collaborators to: 1) manage databases, 2) conduct data analysis and modeling, 3) contribute to writing manuscripts (with potential to lead several), and 4) assist in managing the project. MSU’s strengths in quantitative ecological methods provide a collaborative environment that supports success. The position will begin as a one-year appointment with available extensions, depending on satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Doctorate -Forest or plant ecology or related
Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate must have an earned PhD in forest or plant ecology or related field by the position start date. Strong candidates who expect to receive their PhD at the end of the Spring 2021 semester and who are only finishing minimal dissertation edits will be considered. Quantitative/modeling skills, familiarity with R and/or additional programming languages, and background in plant physiological, community or ecosystem ecology are required.
Desired Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include documented ability to bring projects to completion (publication record), successful grant writing skills, evidence of effective independent and collaborative work, project management experience, and proficiency in Spanish.
