Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy and headquartered in Jackson, Michigan, provides natural gas and electricity to nearly 6.8 million of Michigan's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.This position is responsible for leading and providing technical expertise to Industrial Gas Service Workers (C&I - Commercial & Industrial) who install, repair, inspect, and maintain gas meter installations for commercial and industrial customers. C&I workers also support utility work such as responding to gas emergencies, residential meter work, and customer requested work. The field leader will be a safety leader and promoter of safe work behaviors. This involves facilitating safety meetings and directing work to established work plans and objectives.Job Description/Responsibilities•The Gas Service Field Leader will typically supervise 4-15 bargaining unit Gas Service company employees.•The work involves a mixture of standard to advanced supervisory and operating responsibilities.•A Gas Field Leader is responsible for managing successful headquarter business operations in a cost-effective fashion while maintaining a safe work environment and balancing the needs of the customer and company.•The Gas Field Leader develops direct reports in both business knowledge and technical skills; plans and prudently manages the scope, schedule and cost of work performed; applies thorough understanding of policy coupled with leadership skills to resolve process and employee issues; has thorough understanding of the Working Agreement and is adept at dealing with local union leadership.•Initiates and leads change to improve results.•Professionals in this role have the ability to perform effectively and efficiently in routine and non-routine/emergency situations with minimal guidance.•Responsibilities include supervision of gas service employees, on-call assignments, management of project work, and working extended hours to support a 24/7 operation.•The candidate will also be proficient in the use of supporting computer systems and programs (e.g., Arcos, OMAR/Service Suite, and Outlook) required to complete their day-to-day work.•This position requires demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices and procedures; in-depth knowledge of gas operations; demonstrated leadership capabilities including the capacity to lead change efforts in a competitive business environment; and demonstrated capacity to direct both company resources in both routine and non-routine or emergency operations.Requirements/Qualifications•A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.•3 years' experience in gas transmission, gas distribution, gas construction, gas service, or gas compression and storage; OR•3 years' experience in underground utility operations (e.g., Gas, Electric, Water, Sewer); OR•3 years' experience as a Consumers Energy field operations field leader (i.e., Electric, Fleet, Facilities, Meter Reading); OR•Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or other applicable technical field with 2 years' experience in one of the above listed areas.The following skills / experience may set you apart from others:•Experience working as a team member with a strong background in HVAC, utility work and appliance repair.•Experience and knowledge in metering, regulation, pressures, fuel lines, gas leak and emergency response procedures are also a plus.Essential Functions•Responsible for the planning, organization, coordination, evaluation and supervision of employees assigned to the operation, maintenance and construction of Gas distribution systems, customer Gas services, buildings and grounds or utility support areas.•Recommends proposed changes and enhancements to systems and facilities operation; responds to complaints and requests for information; prepares and maintains reports of completed job orders and the status of jobs in progress.•Inspects job sites to check on work progress, assures satisfactory completion and plans new assignments; prepares requisitions for operations and maintenance supplies, equipment and materials and supervises special projects as required.•Conducts regular safety meetings, participates as a member of safety committee; investigates and completes necessary incident reports and accident reports; maintains records, prepares and submits required reports for appropriate agencies.•Implements preventative maintenance programs.•Regular attendance is expected.Hours and Travel•This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 40 hours per week with a majority of the time spent in the office or specific field locations.•Individual needs to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with emergency activities and could be given very short notice to do so.•Individual should be willing to participate in the on-call rotation.•Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with emergencies which may require overnight stays.•Could potentially work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the customer, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
