• Training in engineering/applied science (materials science (metallurgy), or welding engineering, mechanical engineering, or physics with a materials background)
o BS in engineering/science disciplines with experimentally-based work experience preferred
o Exceptional candidates with Associates degree(s) and/or extensive industrial research/development experience will be considered
• Fluent in Microsoft Office software: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Detailed oriented person who has excellent documentation skills
• Interpersonal skills to work effectively with client employees and visiting scholars consistent with clients inclusivity policy
• Adaptability to working with multiple projects and in different technical areas within the scope of metallurgical analysis
Maintain the metallographic analysis laboratory:
o Be the subject matter expert for all metallographic analysis equipment
o Keep up to date Safe Operating Procedures
o Ensure users of the lab have completed all relevant training prior to use of equipment
o Provide safe use of equipment training for potential users of the lab equipment
o Maintain inventory of lab equipment supplies and order resupply as needed
o Perform routine light maintenance on metallographic equipment
• Cut, mount, polish, etch, and image metallographic coupons comprised of ferrous and non-ferrous metals
• Execute specific metallographic analysis such as taking optical images, measuring microstructural features such as intermetallic layer thickness, microhardness profiles
• Record and share data
• SEM user: Scanning electron microscopic analysis including EDS (the SEM is “owned” by another group)
• Maintain metallographic tracking sheet
• Communicate weekly updates on status in met lab user meeting
• Timely completion of all required client Training
• Collaborate with resistance spot welding and laser welding project teams as an expert in metallographic analysis
