What You’ll Do:
Transport participants to and from activity center and drive bus for outings and field trips. Ensure that children are transported safely and that no child is ever left unattended on the bus. Safety of children is always the top priority for this position.
- Operate bus in a safe, prudent, and legal manner with participants' well-being uppermost;
- Be familiar with the use and contents of first aid kit and operation of the fire extinguisher;
- Ensure a bus aide is aboard on all transportation runs;
- Have a list of the children being transported in vehicle and the names and telephone numbers of parents or guardians;
- Maintain knowledge of area roads, including alternate routes;
- Maintain an up-to-date route sheet that is carried on the bus, and operate routes as written to ensure route times are adhered to;
- Ensure that children are secure in child safety restraints;
- Ensure that children are received by a parent or another responsible person as designated by the parent;
- Ensure there is an adult with children at all times, no child is to be left unattended at any time;
- Ensure that children enter and leave the vehicle from the curbside unless the vehicle is in a protected parking area or driveway or are escorted across by adult if curbside pick-up or drop-off is not possible;
- Ensure that children under the age of six (6) years are carried or helped into and out of vehicle;
- Ensure bus does not move until all adults and children are safely seated and restrained;
- Walk through the bus at end of route to ensure no children remain on bus by utilizing the “bus empty” sign and procedures including completing the appropriate documentation;
- Complete Driver’s Log Book daily, maintaining accurate records of pre-trip inspections, fueling, mileage, and service information. Scan the information and send to the assigned staff;
- Report any mechanical or driving problems and regular service needs to the supervisor and the Transportation Services Manager
- Maintain the bus cleanliness inside and out;
- Pick up assigned bus at the beginning of the program year, and deliver the bus back to the assigned station at the end of the program year, as directed;
- Notify supervisor in advance if unable to drive;
- Attend all required trainings;
- Comply with random drug testing procedures;
- Notify supervisor immediately of any moving traffic violation;
- Be familiar with and adhere to NEMCSA Head Start Transportation Policies and Procedures;
- Work in cooperation with parents and other program staff to meet all program requirements.
- Maintain professionalism in communications with staff, parents and children. Consult supervisor for guidance with difficult conversations.

What We’ll Love About You:
High School Diploma / GED and 1 to 3 years experience driving a commercial vehicle preferred. Employees in this position must possess a valid Michigan Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a P and S endorsement, a personal driving record with not more than 6 active points as determined by the Department of State, current DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and a Michigan School Bus Driver Safety Education Course or Continuing Education Course completion card.

- Work & Pay: As a part of our family, you will work approximately 16 hours per week with a wage starting at $16.20 per hour. This position is expected to work 4-5 days a week. Approximate hours are 7:15-9:15 am and 3:15-5:00 pm.
