Small Commercial Portfolio Underwriter Grand Rapids, MI, USA * Howell, MI, USA * Southfield, MI, USA Req #13525 Thursday, December 3, 2020Our Small Commercial Underwriting department is seeking a Portfolio Underwriter to join our growing team in Howell, MI, Southfield MIPosition summary:Small Commercial Underwriters are responsible for underwriting and retention on accounts for Commercial Lines business. During the course of executing on this responsibility, the Underwriter is expected to partner with Production Underwriters and Field (SCSMs and RVPs); investigate and promote franchise value opportunities including but not limited to cross sell and up sell for renewal accounts handled; engage in producer management of assigned agency plant as necessary andappropriate; and act as the owner of individual renewal portfolio (book and agency) profit and loss. The Underwriter should work closely with their UT partner to ensure all policies are underwritten in the most efficient and effective manner while meeting service standards and performance goals.This is a Full-time, Exempt role.Responsibilities/Essential Functions:•Underwrites and manages CL renewal business handled by the Renewal Center for respective agency assignments responsible for individually underwriting and servicing the non-bypass accounts in their assigned portfolio, including adequately pricing the exposures to attain desired profit returns.•Responsible for contributing to target Center profit and loss metrics for assigned portfolio.•Contributes to portfolio mix in accordance with corporate and Center mix targets.•Recommend pricing decisions in line with Retention and New Money objectives•Handles endorsements on Renewal Center book of business that fall outside of the endorsement authority letter of Rating or Renewal Center UTs.•Handles cancellations on Renewal Center book of business that fall outside of the scope of Renewal Center UTs.•Effectively delivers renewal quotes at appropriate threshold in a professional manner, including quote proposals, cross sells, up sells, and segment expertise awareness as appropriate.•Provide product knowledge transfer to agents so they can effectively sell Hanover as the go to market for their customers•Actively interacts with internal and external customers to enhance the business relationship and improve retention ratios•Effectively presents a clear and consistent underwriting appetite to our production force•Operates within the scope of assigned authority statement•Coordinate with relevant colleagues to effectively manage renewal activities and retention on accounts handled in Renewal Center•Involved in Center and agency management strategies, tactics and activities, and staff meetings, as appropriate.•Participate in field visits to enhance the Renewal Center/Field Office strategy and Agency relationship (Face to name events), as appropriate•Participate in branch/Center marketing events (trade shows, agency training events, etc.), as appropriate•Coordinate with New Business UWs and SCSMs to present a united front on account/agency strategies and decisions.•Participate in agency reviews, agency planning and agency profiling.•Participate in agency results management and results reporting.Key Measures of Success (should align with goals):•Loss Ratio/Profitability•Renewal Retention (based on premium retention results)•Quality of referrals and file reviews/ audits•New Money•Upsell/Cross-sell results•Service Level metrics•LOB and class mix targets.Position Requirements:•Bachelor's degree preferred•Strong underwriting skill and coverage knowledge; ability to make underwriting decisions on POS and CPP accounts up to $50,000 premium size•Entrepreneurial mindset to proactively assist underwriting teams•Strong desire to learn and support multiple geographies, and to solidify understanding of the associated exposures and underwriting guidelines•Underwriting systems knowledge to document and underwrite accounts within workflow expectations•Ability to manage workload to meet goals and service standards, while following workflow standards•Thorough understanding of Agent partners, including agency personnel, agency business plan and results with The Hanover across the Franchise, Hanover's position with the agency, etc.,•Demonstrated commitment to service and partners; high level of responsiveness•Able to build and maintain close working relationships with Agents, UTs, SCSMs, and New Business UWs, demonstrating strong relationship building, teamwork and collaboration skills•Able to understand and execute to strategic...
