General Summary:
Under the direction of the Manager of Patient Access, this position is accountable for registering patients in an accurate and timely manner by obtaining individual identifying and biographical data following appropriate check in processes.
Essential Duties:
Responsible for completing and coordinating each admission in a timely and accurate manner following a courteous and professional attitude; greets patients; explains services and rights to patients; responds pleasantly and professionally with medical staff, visitors, and other patients.
Responsible for securing information necessary to complete admission process and 100% data validation of patient demographics; completes all forms including appropriate signatures; responsible for document imaging scanning of appropriate paperwork prior to services rendered
Responsible for PCP authorization/referral management
Informs and explains to patients/families all applicable government and private funding programs and other cash payment plans or discounts. Incorporates POS (point of service) collection processes into their daily functions
Responsible for monitoring and reviewing all ordered outpatient diagnostic scripts from physicians to ensure appropriate billing and coding occurs and entering accurate applicable data
Performs cashier functions; obtaining and processing patient payments, co-pays, and deductibles, phone and television charges, and patient remittances.
Explains Advanced Directives and consent information and obtains signatures, with witnesses when required by hospital policy, with no validated errors
Other customer service duties may be assigned such as escorting patients to appropriate area or any other clerical tasks as needed
Standard Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma
- Experience: 1 year experience preferred in a customer service role or health care industry.
- Licensure: None
- Skills & Abilities: Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding, medical terminology, and/or revenue cycle knowledge. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks. Knowledge and experience with a variety information systems, experience with spreadsheet and word processing software, and keyboard proficiency.
*Wage rates for this Patient Access Specialist position are governed by a collective bargaining agreement. Wage rates are available in the collective bargaining agreement and in the Human Resources Department.
