JOB SUMMARY: Assumes responsibility for maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for children 0–5 years old for the Children’s Corner, a children’s drop-in center.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise and monitor children's safety, play activities and enhance their learning.
- Keep records on individual children, including daily observations and information about activities.
- Plan and conduct a variety of structured and unstructured activities that are age and developmentally appropriate. (Read to children, and teach them simple painting, drawing, handicrafts, and songs.)
- Develop schedules and routines to ensure that children have enough physical activity, rest, and playtime.
- Organize and participate in recreational activities with children.
- Ability to move and react quickly to a variety of circumstances.
- Assist in preparing food for children and regulate rest periods in coordination with parents.
- Organize and store toys and materials to ensure order in activity areas.
- Sanitize toys and play equipment.
- Work closely with on-site parents to discuss sleep and eating behaviors and needs.
- Monitor supply and cleaning needs of the Children’s Corner space.
- Contributes to the team effort by performing other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) and one to two year of child care experience.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with parents and staff.
- Must possess a valid CPR and First Aid Certification and keep certifications current throughout employment.
- Ability to pass a background criminal investigation check.
- Caring and compassionate attitude.
- Mental ability to handle pressures related to working with young children from diverse backgrounds and needs.
- Physical ability to actively participate in activities with small children. The incumbent may also be required to move play equipment/furniture and/or supplies weighing up to 25 pounds on occasion.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license. Incumbent must also have reliable means of transportation to travel to various locations outside of the office.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
