Eaton Corporation in Southfield, MI seeks Specialist - Controls Engineer to be responsible for helping to define requirements, contributing to definition of electronics hardware design, designing embedded system software architecture and algorithm solutions, defining test plans and performing validation testing to confirm that system and functional requirements are met. Work with team members and engineering manager to estimate development, resources and timing to achieve the desired results. Invent and develop embedded control system strategies and lead architecture design to achieve solutions. Use debugging and simulation tools to efficiently perform design iterations and optimization. Verify solutions created through simulation, sub-system, hardware-in-the-loop and vehicle level testing. Drive implementation consistency across multiple resources contributing to the same embedded system architecture. Champion and document improvements to the engineering standard work processes we use to engineer our products. Develop validation and verification test plans at a unit, sub-system and vehicle level to fully validate requirements. Analyze vehicle data from test and customer vehicles to investigate, identify, and resolve issues and performance complaints. Utilize FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) process to enhance design robustness. Contribute to continued enhancement of Core Embedded Software to support additional product features. Requires 10% domestic travel to attend meetings at other Eaton locations, visit suppliers and visit clients.
This position requires a Bachelor’s in degree Software, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a directly related field plus five (5) years of experience with embedded control system applications or a relevant engineering occupation. Experience must include:
Five (5) years of the following (experience may be gained concurrently):
- Evaluating functionality and calibrate embedded powertrain controls systems in the laboratory or in the vehicle environment;
- Utilizing Matlab and data acquisition and calibration tools to process and analyze complex powertrain data;
Four (4) years of the following (experience may be gained concurrently):
- Inventing, refining and optimizing controls strategies, as well as model implementation in the Matlab/Simulink development environment;
- Using software version controls, including IBM ClearCase, RTC source control, PTC Integrity, or Git based version control
- Experience with a requirements management tool, such as Doors;
- Experience with a software change tracking system, including IBM ClearQuest or IBM Jazz in a global engineering organization;
- Generating Simulink code;
Three (3) years of the following (experience may be gained concurrently):
- Defining, evaluating and decomposing embedded controls system requirements and translating them into Matlab/Simulink architecture;
- Evaluating the functionality of embedded powertrain controls system in the simulated xIL environment to assess system dynamic response, requirements validation and algorithm verification.
Two (2) years of the following (experience may be gained concurrently):
- Experience with Controller Networks, including CAN or J1939 vehicle communication bus protocol;
One (1) year of the following (experience may be gained concurrently):
- Experience with Hardware In the Loop testing and validation;
- Experience with Calibration development;
40 hours / week, 9:00am-5:00pm.
