The Metal Processing Group (MPG) is one of North America’s largest and most diversified manufacturers of steel rod, wire, wire products and fasteners. It is Heico’s largest of four groups with over $900 million in revenues and over 2,000 employees. HMPG is made up of ten business units with a focus on wire rod processing which includes manufacturing facilities and distribution centers throughout the US and Canada.
National Standard is an operating business within the Metal Processing Group based in Niles, Michigan. Situated on 44 acres our 457,000 square foot facility is ideally located to serve major industries throughout the Midwest with wire and wire products. National Standard has current revenues of approximately $40 million with 120 employees. Products include specialty single and multi-strand ACSR steel wire used in overhead power lines across the country, single wire for various industries such as fencing, bedding, furniture, industrial, construction, and steel mesh for the mining industry.
The Position
The Controller is a key strategic partner to the General Manager of the Company and the Metal Processing Group leadership group. This Controller function works in an environment of decentralization and profit center responsibility. The position manages, leads and directs all finance and related business activities and provides information about all Company activities that will assist management and other users in making educated economic decisions about the Company’s future.
Job Description
Primary Responsibilities
* Proactive member of the Company’s leadership team, contributing in the development of its long-term business strategies, and near-term operating plans. Act as an advisory to the General Manager and other senior managers on all financial related issues;
* Drive improvement in business performance through effective cost control, monitoring and reporting systems, with emphasis on profitability and cash flow;
* Deliver accurate and timely financial reports including monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and management reports.;
* Evaluate all financial systems and procedures and implement changes and improvements to increase accuracy, control and timely reporting. Ensure integrity of financial reporting systems;
* Maintain the inventory system with integrity and standardization. Monitor controls over inventory processes and implement changes to improve operations and efficiencies as required.
* Identify opportunities to improve the business through process changes, automation, technology advancements and data analysis;
* Continually review plant and operating costs to justify capital equipment up grades;
* Ensure that financial controls and operating procedures are in place and to comply with GAAP, Group, Parent and legislative requirements;
* Lead the annual budget process and be responsible for monitoring performance to plan on a continuous basis;
* Key partner with local management team developing and following an effective strategic plan
* Ensure best practices are consistently implemented regarding all financial and accounting related processes and procedures;
* Coordinate with internal and external audit teams and take responsibility for related activities, results and action items;
* Implement processes for establishing, monitoring and reporting on performance against KPIs (operational and financial);
* Oversee, direct and organize the work of the finance team. Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality;
* Establish and monitor staff performance and d evelopment goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives and establish priorities. Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach;
* Drive and support compliance and ethical processes and behaviors through the business
Job Requirements
Education
* Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, CPA/CMA preferred, MBA a plus
Skills & Relevant Work Experience
* Manufacturing environment experience, 3 years minimum
* Strong knowledge of cost accounting via hands on experience in a process costing environment; standard costing and variance analysis
* Ability to foster, manage and leverage relationships across the organization – team player
* Robust business, analytical and problem-solving skills
* Audit experience a plus
* Solid professional communications skills (written & verbal)
* Strong analytical, critical thinki ng, problem-solving, management and organization skills
* Advanced understanding of modern ERP systems, Excel & PowerPoint
* Knowledge of MS Dynamics and SAP BPC Consolidation software a plus
