Patient Registration Specialist

OAM is currently looking for a Check In/Check Out Specialist to join our team.
SIGN ON BONUS ELIGIBLE FOR EXTERNAL CANDIDATES - $1000 paid out in the following increments:
- 25% upon successful completion of 30 days
- 25% upon successful completion of 90 days
- 25% upon successful completion of six (6) months
- 25% upon successful completion of one (1) year
POSITION SUMMARY
- Provides excellent customer service to all patients and their family members.
- Schedules return appointments.
- Collects patient due monies: i.e. co-payments/deductibles/AR balances.
- Explains patient account activity as requested.
- Provides education to patients regarding OAM Financial Policy
- Performs charge Entry/Payment Posting
- Conducts End of Day Reconciliation of posting activity.
- Maintains and secures change fund.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists patients in scheduling return appointments consistent with the provider’s templates and scheduling preferences.
- Locates the appropriate appointment time by reviewing the schedule. Offers the first available appointment to the patient, and continue to offer appointments until the patient accepts one that meets his or her needs.
- Asks for the patent’s daytime phone number and where the patient can be reached in the event of an emergency.
- When an appointment is made, slowly restate the date of the appointment, time, office location, and provider name to the patient. This ensures all information was accurately communicated to and received by the patient.
- Provides a reminder card to the patient for the follow-up appointment date and time.
- Reviews patient account to identify the co-payment, deductible and/or patient balance amount to be collected.
- Accurately posts payments and provides the patient with a receipt.
- Assists patients in understanding their account activity as it relates to charges, insurance billing, reimbursement and patient balances. Educates the patient regarding OAM Financial Policy.
- Enters charges from the fee ticket, assigns the appropriate ICD-9 and CPT numeric codes based upon the provider descriptions. Identifies services / procedures that require modifiers and post accordingly. Consults with clinical staff or provider regarding any charge / coding questions when documentation is insufficient to make appropriate assignment of codes.
- Verifies that all patient encounters are accounted for and posted to the appropriate patient account.
- Reconciles posting activity at end of day. Ensures security of change fund and daily deposit in accordance with operating procedure.
- Researches and corrects any posting errors, reports cash shortages to Supervisor.
- Interacts with the medical staff to address any patient needs.
- Interacts with the billing department to assist with patient’s financial or billing concerns.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
REQUIRED / DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Some college or business school course work is preferred
- Minimum of two experience with medical office check-in / check-out functions, insurance billing and self-pay collections, preferably in multi-specialty group practice. (preferred- not required)
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
- Maintain current and relative knowledge of third party payer requirements
- Maintain current and relative knowledge of Federal and State billing regulations and guidelines.
- Possess a thorough knowledge of and experience with automated billing systems.
- Ability to type 45 words per minute.
- Accurate data entry skills with knowledge of basic keyboarding.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to communicate clearly by telephone and in person.
- Clerical and analytical ability to be self-sufficient in performing duties and maintaining confidential records.
- Demonstrates an awareness to age related functions and values when performing assigned tasks.
