Summary
The LPN is under the supervision of an NP/RN and/or MD, yet demonstrates independent technical judgment without the need for readily available supervision, as well as a comprehensive and thorough working knowledge of the most complex and difficult practices and procedures. Such individuals serve as leaders of a Health unit for a specific group of patients/employees, makes observations, documents care delivered and could require that immediate modification of the patient's care plan.

Responsibilities

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides technical nursing care to employees for the Occupational Health Unit. The LPN applies the nursing process to client care, organizational process and/or systems, improving outcomes at the program or service level which support the health care team under limited supervision including but not limited to the following:**
- Responsible for clinical program management and administration for several mandated OSHA, JCAHO, Safety Management, Infection Control and Medical Center programs.
- Plans and implements the yearly influenza campaign.
- Is a resource to employees, supervisors and providers for the Worker Compensation program/process.
- Works with provider who initiates treatment plans and limited duty assignments for work related injuries
- Advises employees on process of filing a worker compensation claim and refers to appropriate point of contact.
- Coordinates staff regarding HIV consent and treatment options.
- Facilitates care for employees who are in the Hepatitis vaccination and needle stick programs.
- Is a resource to employees and supervisors regarding ECOMP.
- Resource for urgent care and providers when dealing with work related injuries and the worker compensation process.
- Presents overview of Occupational Health at New Employee Orientation every other week.
- Work with employees with injury or illness to determine if they need to be seen in Urgent Care.
- Provide teaching involved with different dressings and medications.
- Conducting appropriate employee health education especially for chronic health conditions.
- Knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems. The LPN works with the Employee Health MD to appropriately train/orient other staff.
- Ability to serve as a responsible member of the nursing team and interact in an appropriate manner with patients, family members, professional and other supportive personnel.
- Knowledge and skill sufficient to prepare, administer, and appropriately document actions taken specific to commonly prescribed medications as permitted by approved local facility policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and ability to recognize the need for and to institute emergency measures when indicated
- Maintains BLS and TB Certification
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications
Basic Requirements: - United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - Education. Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) NLNAC Website. Exceptions: (1) Health care education/training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body as qualifying for full LPN licensure. (2) VHA employees who were converted to Hybrid appointments. (3) Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school. - Licensure. Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia. - Physical Standards. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019, also listed below in this announcement. - English Language Proficiency. LPN appointed must be proficient in both spoken and written English.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade. The candidate's qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade.
GS-3 ($34,117-$44,353) None beyond the basic requirements. LPNs at this grade level are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license (e.g., medication administration); however, completed work may require routine or detailed higher level review depending upon the complexity of the duties involved.
GS-4 ($36,464-$47,398) Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN; or Graduation from an approved school and one year of experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures; or Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
GS-5 ($39,329-$51,124) Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems. Knowledge and skill sufficient to prepare, administer, and appropriately document actions taken specific to commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous medications as permitted by approved local facility policies and procedures.
